What sleeping bag to buy

Aight, my sleeping bag is officially retiring after 12 years of solid use. Old Domex Mountaineer has had a good innings but time for a replacement.
Seeing what everyone out there is using, I'm currently eyeing up a Rab Neutrino Pro, 500 or 700 (too scared I'll rip a mythic and my pockets aren't quiet that deep 🤣) but contemplating a Kuiu sleeping bag as well, if there's anyone out here using a kuiu that can speak for them I'd love to know how they're stacking up?
As always any input/feedback is welcomed!!!

Have a couple days then I'll be hitting the buy button before a fee upcoming spring tahr/chamois hunts.

Cheek out the one planet bags kinda sit in between those two from memory

I see your last bag was a Domex, would you not consider one of the newer Domex Halo range ? I have a Halo XT absolutely love it.

Na I've had hands on a few of the new Domex Halo bags and not a fan personally, mate has a Rab Mythic and it's insane he just got it at a bargain price the lucky bugger hahaha. In my opinion the domex don't stack up to what the Rab and Kuiu bags are these days. That's just my opinion from my limited exposure to them though.

Sorta understand what you mean, I think the temp rating is a little optimistic, but well made, heaps of room and for me extra long(important when your 6'8), gonna drop my halo to twin needle at some stage for a down top up which will help. I've used mine in temps down to -6c in light 3 season tent without issue.

Another vote for the One Planet bags. Definitely worth a look.

After much investigation (months) I settled on a Halo for my self and a One Planet Bungle -10 for the wife. Both of us are very happy in our choices.
Mine is a little lighter and smaller when compacted. Both are great for anything in the NI, but I see you're not..

Yea hahah, great for the north island, we get a little hit colder here in twizel through winter though, gonna run 2 bags as we have the opposite problem in summer, too darn hot. Do the guys running the Domex bags have any issues with the zips sliding open through the night? Seen quiet a few reviews criticizing that part of them?

I am pretty confident that Blair at Wear on Earth has made / makes sleeping bags but there are none listed in his catalogue. However it would certainly be worth trying him first to see if he will make you one.

A number of clients in Canada rated the Kuiu bags, except for one thing - they were small, not a lot of room. Pay to have one in your hand before committing.

Got the KUIU 0 Degree a couple years back. Rate it really high, was using a MacPac -5C Bag before and the materials used are way nicer to the touch. Pretty awesome warmth to weight ratio, wish I had got a 15 or 30 model though, shes quite toasty during the summer months while I save for another bag

I'm 6ft6 around 100-110kg so quite broad in the shoulders and the large Kuiu bag fits me perfect

I have a Rab Mythic, scored 'as new' off a traveler leaving the country, They are tougher than they look/feel but would rip easier than a lot. I do use an outer cover if just out under a tarp or fly. Light and warm.

I bit the bullet and bought a good 600 weight bag from macpac...on sale so 20% off I got the extra large and dont regret it a bit...funny I tried the std in the shop..got home and drove 40 kms each way to exchange it for the larger version...no more cramping shoulders in wee small hours,I sleep really well in it and its first bag Ive eve been able to zip right up on cold night and not feel cramped.

I bought the Macpac 700 XL, I realy like it, heaps of room and comfortably warm at -2 wearing a set of thermals. They are regularly on special forup to 40% off.
I also bought a Kathmandu Navigator. It packs down smaller than the Macpac. I haven't tried it myself but the young fella said "It's soooo good!" after the same -2 night

I'm going to guess delivery might be a bit hit and miss due to the war but they do state they deliver worldwide. I got one of these from a NZ supplier a year or so back and it's bloody awesome, packs down small as, dwr outer, just over 1kg and it lofts up tonnes and is super warm. Have we a Halo also and this is way better in every way .

I have a marmot never summer for winter use, have had it in pretty cold situations. A good mat makes a big difference but that's another topic. Just another bag option to through in the mix.

The best you can afford , it will last 20years or more so cheap in the long run

So many options thses days it's hard to find what works for you. I went through the same and ended up with a Sea to summit ascent 2. It's about 1kg and has more features than a Tezla. My favourite is the foot box zip and quilt feature.

I continue to use my Fairy Down Scorpian sleeping bag brought in 1988. One of the secrets is to use a liner (started with a silk one then moved to a cotton liner) - i have gone through about 3 bag liners now? Plus just over 10 yrs ago sent to Twin Neeedle to add more loft. Zip has never failed. Weight is about 1.3 kg. Plus i don't 'dribble' so my bag is still in good nick. I hunt monthly on multi day trips including previous tahr trips. I don't really feel the cold too much though on some heli or 4wd trips take my Army alpine Domex bag where weight/bulk is not an issue. Like people say - buy once cry once and look after your gear - many years of enjoyment ......hate to think how many farts my bag has put up with!

Yep the old fairy downs and Macpac bags from late eighties were incredible , still got my Macpac Saphire

I did buy a Rab recently , it packs smaller ,is lighter and warmer than my 35 yr old Macpac hence the upgrade , they are slimmer though with a small foot box , I think it was around $1000 from memory but when it’s really cold and you can get in that bag and get warm it is money well spent , a good quality mat is also essential by the way if you want the most out of your bag

my one planet is great, good quality, good price and havent been to a place in the NI that i have been cold in. And if it weren't warm enough a pair of thermals did the trick.

The aussie trampers rate them.
Tramping hiking reviews are worth studying some of them really know what they are talking about.
They spend a lot of time and money on the same gear as hunters and some do big trips and use in all conditions.

@Dicko , EXPED Downmat , not sure what model but couple years old , much better than the neo air I had

The army surplus nz ones look awesome - comparable weight and warmth to the Domex but $150. Worth a look.

I’ve got a domex halo, it’s been fine most times of year but definitely not a great South Island winter bag for me. Will go with the likes of a heavier Macpac next time.
What did you end up with @WildBrad ?

I've got a macpac one that does well at -10. Add that liner and it's cozy as.

Send it to twin needle and get them to top up the down, will make a world of difference.....been meaning to get mine done too, great roomy bag just the temp rating a little optimistic, not been a huge issue with a thermolite bag liner and a decent sleeping mat but imagine if I used it in minus 7-10 it would be character building

If anyone's interested I've found a local nz seller. Based in taupo. Bootsandgear.com. $499 I can't find anything thats better for that price. I've just ordered one and will post my thoughts on it after I've put it to the test. I'm sure it's the bees knees if Ryan has recommended it . I also picked up a wee honey badger knife after Ryan recommend it and it's bloody amazing. Thanks Ryan!
