Whats is in your load out?

    Hey guys,

I'm interested in seeing what do we all carry and what do we consider essential items? Both for Day Hunts and over nighter/multi day.

I'm not set up for multi day hunts at the moment - need to update / replace and add some gear.

Day Hunts (as i list this it seems like heaps!) - load my old webbing:

Rifle - scope/sling/suppressor/bipod/ mag and ammo
    NZDF waist webbing rig
    knife
    lighter
    lense cloth
    water + replace powder
snacks (OSM / muesli bars / bumper bars)
small first aid kit + NZDF israeli bandage
    phone with Toppo50 GPS app
    T.Paper
    spare socks
    jacket if dicey weather
small dry bag with beanie, thermal shirt, gloves, balaclava inside - doubles as rear bag for long shots

Slowly setting up for multi day - picked up an old K2 Hunter 85L pack, have my old NZDF sleeping bag (to be replaced) and bivvy bag, old gas stove (to replace), old NZDF hoochie (needs replacing not water proof anymore)

    looks pretty good to me...
add small light steel to touch up knife..$20 off trademe, goes back into its handle container.
epirb when funds allow you to purchase.
thats an awesome pack...look after it and it will serve you well.
pikau.....mines made like a giant pillowcase, out of polarfleece..has tennisball in each corner and larks head knot in seatbelt goes over these..the belt comes off for deer carry duty and the bag goes inside plastic bag and into deer gut cavity...

I always take a headlamp. Even if it's supposed to be a "back by lunchtime" hunt.

    Other essentials:
    First aid kit
    Compass
    Knife
    PLB
    Bolt and ammo!

boots...dont forget your boots...its a right bastard hunting hill country in smooth soled town shoes....almost as bad as night in highcountry without your sleeping bag......or 3 day hunting trip without matches or lighter cause youve just given up smokes and didnt have them on you automatically anymore.

    Yep.... +1 on the headlamp.

Around here I always take/wear instep crampons - stops you from slipping on the slippery tussocks.

My daypack has the knife and rangefinder always attached and ready to go. Often carry a UHF radio too, especially if hunting with others.

I don't carry a compass around here as I think its impossible to get lost in these hills but I certainly carry one in the North Island and in Fiordland.

original thread plus wire and tape

Tape I wrap wide plastic tape -PVC type- around my lighter about 10 times
Wire I carry a few lengths of reinforcing tiewire for repairs - once deep in the tararuas I used a piece when a pin on my rifle sling fell out

And a small thing of hand sanitiser - it doubles as a fire starting agent

I will just use my normal pack even if just day hunting nowadays (Cactus Hector) but I find it really good to keep all my bits and bobs nice organised and handy.
I bought a small Cactus zip pouch and into that goes:

    Camera and spare battery
    Bino tripod adapter
    First Aid
    Insulation tape
    Headtorch
    Spare 18650
    Spare Mercator
    Compass
    GPS
    Gun Pouch

In my gun pouch (twin needle ammo pouch) I put:

    5 spare rounds
    Pull thru
    Small bottle of rem oil

And in my Bino Biv I have:

    Binos
    Rangefinder
    Lens Pen
    Diamond stone
    Mercator
    Spot X

I find that keeps everything nice and tidy and in one place. I will put my bag of goodies in the top of my pack so it's easy to get to. The only change I'd like to make is sew a bit of elastic on the side of my Bino Biv to hold my Spot X in place, at the moment it's attached with a carabiner and I tuck it inside my shirt.
