    aint hunting grand

    what a day
me mate ando had to drop his daughter at dragon boat raceing in ashburton .
''i cant pick her up til 5 wanna go to the lake[elly] ??''
''yea why the hell not bit late in the morning but lets go have a look around ''
well we jumped in the first mai mai we saw and proceded to fight the parries off .
we could have shot our limits if we hadnt run out of ammo
all we had out were 3 parrie shells[no stakes] 12 goose sillys and 5 goose shells minus stands which id left on ando,s bumper and are strewn from rakaia to christ knows where.
the birds came in every 20 t0 30 minutes and by jesus i missed having a dog.
we missed a bit at first before starting to down them.
we chased a woundie or 2 about when we both ran out of ammo niether of us had brought more than 15 rounds or so because we eally didnt expect much due to our late arrival.[img][/img][img][/img]

Are they good to eat? My grandpa always told me to cook them with a stone in the pot and then eat the stone instead but he has been wrong about things before.

we wouldnt have shot our limits anyway we,d already decided 10 each would have been plenty.
we ended up with 12 and still had a enjoyable 6 hours or so.
3 inch steel in a 20,s no laughing matter and seems to mimic the bigger gauges in that lead is reduced.
plus the bigger shot sizes do kill when your on the money ie crossing shots or head on but going away you need to get it front as much as a beak lead.
so putting the pattern the area between the wings and melon to drop them cleanly and damn the patterns tight out of even a 1/4 choke.putting the pattern.
    conclusions
the steel 2,s kill ok but 3.s 0r 4,s would be better to many broken wings requiring a 2nd shot with the bigger shot and less full tight patterns.
considering the ranges the 3 inch steel was overkill nothing we shot couldnt have been cleaned up with my usual eley hi flyer or hull high pheasant lead loads.
probably with a lot less fuss and wounding to.
but apart from 2 totaly lost birds, one maybe dog recoverable, it wasnt as bad as i thought it was gonna be.
    solution
not one in sight untill 20 gauge kent fast steel 2 3/4 inch loads become available or at least the black cloud 3 inch in 4,s but at 39 buks a box plus frieght ouch.

Just one error there Mdub, you're sposed to put a good bottle of red wine, in with the bird and stone, cook until the stone is tender throw away the bird and stone and enjoy the gravy...

to be honest i reckon to much good game meat is ruined with that red shite.
not a fan of it at all might be okay to flavour tough old shit but good tender prime game meat dont need that crap.
