I just picked up 500 rounds of 2 3/4" 1 1/4oz #4 shot for opening weekend. Mainly because all of our shots will be well inside 40 yds on the pond.
It was an effective killer last year. Whats everybody else using?

I used 3s last year because they didn't have any 4s in stock. Preordering and changing to 4s this year. There is also the new 30g high velocity steel ammo from Falcon this year that could be worth considering for pond shooting.
I use Hypersonic 3" #3's but the last one out the spout is a tungsten.
Black cloud.... jokes.
Whatever I can find, don't reckon it matters
Yip. mid range 3s or 4s 2-3/4 probably kent fast steel. If we can kill a couple hundred geese with 67mm 4s. Then it should be good enough for ducks.

lead, 6's or 7's or maybe the odd few 4's
12g for mud pie shooting only and............................................... ..20g or 28 for everything else. Mud pie gun too big and heavy to cart round. Apparently according to F&G anyway I will be smiting things left right and center,as 20g gauges have mystical propeties.
Its a growing "movement" according to their research :D
I reckon I'd get by the season and be lucky to use over 2 boxes
Or come to the Far North with us
Gamebore super steel 2 3/4" 32gr #3-ducks
Clever 2 3/4" 36gr #6 & Saga 28gr #7-upland
7s in the first barrel & 6s in the second for upland
3" Magnum kents
To be fair, I am still using the same 4 boxes of 20g ammo I brought for ducks/pheasants 4 years ago. I shoot a lot of ammo at clays but nevr have much luck on the duckies and pheassies. Shooting spots are hard to find and the duck numbers are nothing like Canterbury (where I grew up). Still fun getting out though
I should have phrased my original question better. I wasn't try to imply I will cut through 500 rounds on the opening four days because I won't.
The two slabs will last into next year. I did the same last year and have still got 5 boxs. Going to be good though. Not long now:cool:
All good
I normally get a slab cause I shoot a lot of clumps of dirt when I'm bored and pigeons
Countdown to 3. Mai 2014 06:30 in Wellington
Anything that knocks em down my dogs will retrieve:)
Still got ammo left over from last year as I didnt fire a blinking round...except at clays :TT TT::TT TT: but I am quietly hopeful to do better this year!!!!
Same here although I did fire a single shot at a pheasant and .................................................. ................................missed!
Brought 4 boxes of the 20g good stuff (copper plated 5's) 4 years ago for pheasants ago and still have 3 full boxes + 22
just dug out my stash, got a full slab of falcon "3 steel #2, half a slab of kent fast steel 2 3/4 #2, and a mix of over 100 other random rounds, all #2 shot tho. dose anyone think #4 shot is a bit small for large open water shooting? i thoght i might give it a go and see if more spread will get me more ducks
I shoot pheasants through the bird season.Shoot forestry and private farms in the BOP if I can get access. Favourite load Federal PF154 2 3/4" #6 and #7.5. Very fast and hard hitting copper plated lead-1550ft/sec....just don't shoot em too close!
Shoot about 50 birds per season although I only shot 27 last year....bloody herbicide use in forest killing all the inkweed/blackberry! Use less than 4 boxes/season and I'm not that good a shot:oh noes:
I will let you know. We have previously used Kent 3" going as fast as hell in #2 shot, and some Federal I managed to find. Both shotties cracked parts by the end of the year (Rem 1187 - never had a problem before). This year I have gone for Falcon 3" in #4 for first shot, followed by Falcon 3" in #3 shot-both 1-1/4oz at 1450fps. We shoot on a large lagoon, so I will be interested to see how it goes. I reckon it will be the ducks nuts!!!!!!!!::P
Think I still got a box & 1/2 from three years ago & keep stocking up every year.Bit of a stash in the shed.
Found Eley 36gr steel #4 very good shell @ 1550fps ,effective on parries too.
Wasn't able to get hold of any more so various other brands in 36gr # 2 & 3 shot as did have some concerns about #4 shot being a bit light .#2 steel equivalent to lead #4 apparently .
i must see if i can get down on some magnum loads, all my loads are 32gr. i do have some 40 gr loads but theyre lead, bummer bout that.
I want to moved to North Island .
Ammo for opening ?
Probably use A-Maxs for the top of Ihaka spur, if the 7mm08 then 140g BT.
Won some steel shot at a sporting shoot last week, plus found a couple of half boxes in the back of the cabinet. Mixture of Remington 4s, kent 2s and some 3s of some sort. Found two boxes of Kent 3" 2s too. Not having to by ammo is nice.

Game bore super steel 2 3/4" ( 1 1/16oz) No 3#'s..... For everything... None will miss a bird.
Because my shoulder is too rooted to shoot this year !! Mine will have to keep until next season.
Good luck to all.
You're kidding yourself if you think a 20g kills better then a 12g. They both kill just the same its YOU thats changed
Anyhow I used 28gr #4 cause thats all that was in the shop in 20g gauge and it seemed to peel the ducks back as good as the old boys double barreled 12's
12g = Steel
20g = Lead,
Doesnt matter if its 3/4, 1oz or 3oz. You still gotta put it in the right place. Something I couldn't seem to manage shooting clays this morning :)
