where would be the best quail hunting to be has in the south island ?
I'd guess tarris and surrounding central otago .
the best quailhunting is where you find large numbers of birds in relatively open country.numbers will vary from year to year due to factors.the best shooting is on private stations.marlborough and central are generally the best areas, although in marlborough this year, as a result of a very wet spring, numbers are well down.
Some of the better stuff is where Munsey mentioned. Benigo and around Wanaka have good numbers and I've seen plenty on some on the stations I've hunted Chukar(around Tekapo and Benmore).
EASY TO GET ON THOSE PLACES?
what no tweed just nude covered with a bit of grease from lard ???? id better watch it down south :yarr:
You do well in Waimate ! Ever shot wallaby ?
never shot wallaby , waimate sounds scarey !!
You could contact the Marlborough Fish & Game to get names of farmers up the Awatere. Good luck tho, they aren't on the ball at all.
Awatare valley look out for the "darkeys "up there ! We were told ! Aye James . I should have said look out for the red neck high country farmers !
Haven't been up the Awatere for many years. Need 4 wheel drive. Fantastic country, wild and mean and steep, and totally suitable for the long legged pointing breeds. Used to be a good number of quail if you drove and looked, so big you have to drive, don't know what it's like now.
is it on private or public land?
Not sure what the story is these days, was Landcorp I think, some might be DoC now. You still have to get permission. The Marlb F&G would know who the farmers are. They should help you... but?

Used to stay on Camden. It's sold but I think yu can still bunk there. Not sure tho.
these rakaia quail are still making a mug of me the crossing angled shot is my nemesis :yaeh am not durnk:they came one after the other 5/6 ina row and i missed them all inside 20/25 metres:O_O:
to top it off the dog pointed and flushed the biggest nth canterbury pheasant iv,e seen for a while:pissed off:
are you lifting your cheek from the stock, common problem when shooting over broom on riverbed, keep that gun moving, don't stop on trigger pull.remember angle and lead change rapidly on a crosser, especially if shooting close.
dont think so im only getting one shot per bird as the drop in to the broom over banks or higher scrub:dizzy:
its the angle thats stuffin me. left to right should be a lolly for me but its crossing with like 30 t0 45 degree angle away and by the time the angle brings them briefly tail on theyre behind or over something:wtfsmilie::pissed off::D
Good numbers between Cromwell and Alexandra. Shot quite a few in Bannockburn.

Saw them by the truckload through Bendigo and even Cromwell town outskirts a few months back
used to be a lot up on the hills above lake coleridge village to and the flats opn barrossa station ip the ashburton gorge
Quail are a challenge to hunt. They are noisy, ‘talkative’ birds making it easy to identify where a group or ‘covey’ may be resting but their rapid speed and small size make the shooting challenging.
There are good sized coveys in the Cromwell/Bannockburn area at present. I shot for a living in the Awatere valley in the '60's and there were good numbers of Quail on the river flats and side gullies. Chukar were in reasonable numbers higher up the hillsides in rocky outcrops.
