Start off on a hemp rope Eeebees. Much easier going till you get the hang of it. My brother was brilliant at it. I sucked.
If you can locate the bible on leather braiding (Amazon has it) Leather Braiding by Bruce Grant is all you need. You need a decent fid as well. If you use precut leather braiding lace practice on string first...cos the lace is so expensive!!

You can often find the brass rings and swivels on my favourite shop ebay.co.uk for a fraction of the price we pay here...and that is solid brass stuff.
Cheers EeeBees
I found this and will give it a crack, more like the leash in your other post

Similar to rope splice but with the lay instead of across the lay and tapered back in. Should be plenty of tube vids

Wire Rope Splice - YouTube
he makes working the fid look so easy!!!!
Yea na, like this. Only little rope but you can imagine what it is like trying to drive a marling spike into rope like your first vid!
Eyesplice
Main difference with wire is its wound with the lay instead of across the lay like fiber rope and each strand is completed before the next is started. The "fid" or "marling spike" is wound forward, strand inserted then wound back tight to lock it in then forward again to reinsert. Didn't watch the whole vid but it didn't look like they were going to taper it in.
On big rope its a two man job working the spike in turns;)
The big ropes what are they used for, like the ones they use with the haulers in the forests...
Nice
Best guy I've seen on wire rope was a Canadian logging trainer we had down south, man alive could he spice!!
