    North island upland hunting

I'm just running this through my head at the moment , if I can afford it? ( time off work , fuel, ferry , accom etc ) . Also depends on my dogs progress ( so far so good) I would love to do a week on upland birds up north . How far north would I have to go ? . What is the best time to hunt ie early in season or later? .

With the dry spell we are having in the far north the upland hunting will be better later in the season, if you decide to come up let me know

Bugger me I am thinking of coming South as better limits and the chance to maybe have a go at Chukar. My dogs however are more hunting companions than hunters. They simply don't get enough practise.
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

There was a day when malbrough had some of the finest upland game shooting in the country I'm told . What went wrong ? . Forestry . Grapes?

Well 1 Cock bird a day, Public land only has 6 day season for Pheasants, private land is all season but hard to find private land to shoot on. Most land owners seem to prefer live birds rather than hunters eating them. Last year I drove to Mid Canty for my pheasant hunting.

Hell of an offer Munsey, I'd follow him up on that one! I'm not sure if Northland is the best in the NI in regards to bird numbers, but it has great running for pointing dogs. To get the most out of some of those spots you need a dog to match the country

If you end up doing the trip make sure you get in touch

Rotoehu(?) forest around Rotorua is awesome for pheasants. Heaps of them because there are two game preserves in the area. The birds are pretty scary though. I only ever got one point out of my Wires, the pheasants would run when they heard us coming.

If you are heading up I can take you out in Manawatu, public land hunting but there are birds around if you are prepared to work for them

I'd be keen to jump in on this as well if anyone's organising something. 14 kms today for one flush - a hen.
