I would but I am in Nelson....................., Went last year in your neck of the woods and managed to actually see one then went over the road where the season is much longer and better limits. Saw lots but had no gun. Where you going, North or south?
Oh and Good luck
I'm going to have my first go at them tomorrow.
I know a few places on Rakaia River south side but they be hard work for man and dog. Not pointer country thats for sure

He doesn't mind hard country
Yeah, I don't have a dog but mate on here does. Should be interesting.
That is commitment from your mate Munsey.
Very damp conditions , rained last night and still foggy now . Dog working well put up two hens but no cocks . He did a wicked retrieve on a high mallard that crashed out into the thickest shit you could imagine .
A party of 6 shooters got the jump on me . Didn't see the point in hunting in the dark wtf ! . Have lunch and hit another spot
Well Munsey, how did you get on?? Its dark outside and you cant use a spotlight hunting pheasants :)
Just so happened I was in Chch
Doing an airport drop off so I
Figured why not chuck in the gun and dog
And go for a nosy. Tried a new spot
And Got an early rooster. Then harassed some
Quail for a bit then did some exploring.
Turned out to be not a bad day.
No roosters
Put up another hen , and got on to a covey of about 20 quail , completely blew it . Only one and lost one . Had some chances dog went well on them and picked them up from a bit out too . Made up for the punch up , we had over a possum he wouldn't leave .
Went out late this morning with Bob da Browning. There should have been lanes in the river bed with the amount of traffic. I ended up with one low flying hare that I retrieved myself.
Hmmm. That didn't go too well.
have just returned from a family w/e in auckland(rugby included).driving out to sisters place at clarkes beach on friday pm ,we nearly skittled a bloody great fat pheasent strolling across the road.-apparently this bloke is a local identity ,whom some beleive demands motorists stop for him.bloody south islanders nearly ran over fat boys tail.:wtfsmilie:
i dont hunt pheasants in freezing pissing down conditions.
its murder on the dogs scenting and i dont believe they get about much anyway under those conditions.
ducks were on the agenda this morning and they didnt play the game either.:pissed off::yaeh am not durnk:
Was a good "opening day" two birds in the bag, BUT two hunters, just out of Christchurch so away from home about 1345 and back home by 1700, and that is having to travel right across town. Ideal spot for them as plenty of food. And more birds there. Same place again today spotted on Rooster, but they had been disturbed, so no more sorry to say - now for the cooking. Just eating the second lot of wild duck pâté, and a wild duck Terrine in the fridge, will try tomorrow evening.
Just after a morning rain is the best time of all, really brings them out
Saturday afternoon the roosters were making a heap of noise in the sunshine. My dog wasn't listening so left him in the ute. Managed to stalk up on once that was responding to calls, he was on the edge of some deep blackberry. Got right on top of him with a closed gun and when he flushed I just couldn't get a good line on him before he got to the pine trees.
Saw his landing and then ran. Couldn't find that one again.
Heard another about 10 minutes, got close to him and he replied to toots on the caller, but then went quiet. I looked pretty well in the bush and cover to flush him, but could find him. must have walked off.
After this one, the fog rounded in and they stopped making noise and with the dog not playing well, it's near impossible to find them productively. The conditions were great on Saturday, patchy rain and sunny spells. They need the sun to dry out and warm up again.
Saw two on Sunday morning while driving to the pistol club on the road side. Didn't got out looking on Sunday for birds.
i dont wander about in off colour wheather munsey.Quote:

My dog struggled in the wet . he put up one hen at about 3 inches from his nose and to be honest he never smelt it and had no time to put brakes on . He almost caught it ?. That would have been interesting as fish and game where out in force .
its bad for me and the dogs complexion:thumbsup we do like to take the afternoon sun occasionaly tho:ORLY:: i,ll wait till its warm and get them when they cross acton road to the pig farms other land in csi:D
You wanna try working some cutover when a
Fleet of yapping howling beagles comes charging through.
15 of the buggers at least.
Turned loose by the local beagle club to run
Wild and chase what they will till they eventually
Trickle back in.
I didn't see any roosters in that spot amazingly enough
Our prefer to show where to go and the rest is up to me :)
