In drought conditions when upper soils dry out the invertebrates go much deeper. In other dry periods I have noticed significant drips of pheasant survival; they starve. Quail are not affected the same way as they have a more vegetable based diet.

pheasants seem to be partial to carrots, have had them wipe out my carrot patch right down into the ground so only the end of the root was left.

I never had any quail. But just latley I have a few, seen the odd pheasant too. More birds in general. I thought it might be because I've been tipping over the plovers.
I'm not sure if it's right, but I brought some bird seed, Chuck a few handfuls on the lawn to keep them around.

You would be surprised what you find in a wild pheasants group.
They seem to love buttercup and other wild flowers, plus of course wild grins and not so wild. Corn etc. Clover and then if an insect is walking past they will take that too.
Basically a little like a chock but a little more fussy.
