    Short Morning Quail Hunt

Well, my grandson out-shot me 4 to 1 this morning, and ancient Rocky had a great time. He pointed well and found two cripples we were about to give up on. Scenting conditions couldn't have been better with good moisture from some light rains two days ago and a light breeze from the west, perfect for hunting my small farm.

Owen was using his Weatherby SA-08 he got from John Barsness, and I was fumbling with my fairly new Kreighoff 16ga/7X65R drilling.

Time to clean birds for tonight's dinner and cut cockle-burs out of old Rock's feathers.

    Well done.
A lot of quail around here at the moment. Just went for a ride on my mountain bike for an hour and must have see 50 of them (half of which were young ones).
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

We've got them around the house too but I wouldn't be very popular if I shot one.

These will be dinner on Saturday, when Owen and his sister come out.

I like to roast them and baste with honey-butter and Old Bay Seasoning outside. I stuff them with a seasoned cracked wheat and barley pilaf with a few chopped shallots and a little marjoram. I like a crisp Pinot Blanc with quail, and I deglaze the roasting pan with a little Marsala to drizzle on the birds.

Dang! Suddenly the oatmeal I just had for breakfast doesn't seem very satisfying.

Marsala ... what a great idea ... !!! Are they Californians or Gambels ... the head colour pattern is quite similar ... we do not have the Gambel here ... yes, I can appreciate your choice of such a wine to compliment the birds ...

We still have four and a half months to our Opening Day ...

We close the upland season the first Sunday in February, then it's out to Pyramid Lake for the winter cutthroat trout fishing. They're getting over 20 pounders this season. It's a unique desert lake and feels prehistoric.

This is how my dogs look two weeks after the bird season closes.

Oh...and they are California Valley quail. The Gambles live about 400 miles south in the state, near Las Vegas.
