Poison I used last season, Eley is no longer on the menu and I have obtained some more Remington Nitro Steel - Speed is good. The jury is still out on the winchester xpert I didn't really feel that it performed as well as my remington hi speed
more specifically the 1400fps ammo
Fioccoli HP 30 gram in the 20ga, size 4 modified choke.
GB 36grm #3 lead cause its cheap and all the shop has besides Winchester but it cost more. Then 3inch GB steel #2 38grm.
Gamebore super steel, 2 3/4 inch,32g #3s
ihad good cresultwith eley alphamax3"steel.Im using a mix of steel 3"&2 3/4 all out of my ammo store.
Actually since the advent of steel shot there really is only one answer to this question : All shotguns will pattern differently to one another. One mans ammo that allowed him good clean kills
will wing the shit out of ducks when used in another gun. Proved this in over the last few seasons with Mossberg Pump ,Mossberg Semi, Berretta Extrema and Remington Semi plus a couple of others O+U etc
If you wish to succeed with steel you really need to check several brands , shots sizes etc etc. Get your mates togeather and buy coupla different boxes each and get a roll of newsprint paper.
We shot at 20 and 40 mtrs. Take your shot retrieve your page write down which ammo next persons turn etc. At the end lay them down forget everybody else and analyse your own to determine your finalists then
retry.
Plenty articles on the web such as How to Pattern a Shotgun. This worjked awsomely for us and our hit - kill rates doubled and trebled instantly.
Now fuc the gun shops cos my winner is no longer available so about to repeat the process next week or two. Buying the odd box now to trial. At least if no good its still there for other stuff rabbits etc.
And of course since when can you have too much ammo....
yeash it is grubby ,that i must admit ,but the important part is it effectively anchors whatever it hits and sometimes quiet spectacularly.another ive had good results with is english Hull brand ammo (solway 3"magnum34gm steel " from Barry Fosters stihl shop in blenheim rd chch.
Barry imports this plus trap ammo and overall does great deals.Iuse his trap ammo exclusively in both my guns.
Me and 30calterry did the work Sunday tried about 8 different boxes on paper at 30 mtrs The winner for both even tho a Beretta and a Rem semi was Clever no 3 shot in 3 inch 36 gram loads by a mile followed by the same in number 2 then for me some Rio then Rem hypersonic Guess what the clever Mirage ex Reloaders burns clean as well as being best pattern and it's $14 bucks a box so wicked price as well as working for us Slabs on the way as its nearly half what we previously paid. I reckon we re sorted ... Still have not a drop of water in the opening day pond tho so bring on the rain or we re in the shit !!!
Big thanks guys, Happy, i will try out the 'paper test' thing on different shells.....its all good, not long now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use federal 3.5 inch in BB for ducks with full kicks choke,
Smack em out wide and hi... Love it
What about when they are close? Has any body else heard of/ used GB?

When close in my mate shoots em with the modified choke in 3 inch #2'
Team effort,and produces more.
The stuff GSP follower got for me, only used five rounds last season. Thinks I'll just use what I didn't use last year.
Falcon 3'' steel 1/4, 3 shot, $15-00 a pkt, modified choke.
Fiocchi 16 gauge 1 1/8 oz. 4's!!
Don't normally chase the waterfowl but will just use the same 1an 1/4 5s in 20g (Winchester Super Pheasant) although this year I am gonna use my 28gauge inserts with 3/4 oz for everything else (upland) just for a change.
All my shell are filly with the nasty evil LEAD shot. I do own a 12g Remi 870 but hasn't been out of the safe in 5 years apart from one round of clays last month. Sub Gauges are where its at for me.
Nope I just wont hunt ducks at all. Unless there is a credible / affordable alternative then I will most likely
a) give up the occasional duck hunting I do do
b) just go back to shooting sport clays.
c) import some Nice Shot and keep it for waterfowl
I like the sub gauges cause they are light and despite what many think just as efficient at what they do. A 3/4oz of 6's @ 1300fs is just the same from a 12 or 28g. Just there is more margin for error with a 12g
A box of 20 or 28g ammo fits the pocket so much better than a box of 12. Guns are lighter and better pointing for fast shooting on upland game
I would really like a good U/O 28g, I plan to buy a really good one to use and hand it down to my nephew when he is old enough as we have no kids of our own and a 28g is a better gun to learn with than a .410
Been looking at a Fair Pathos
Mikee good comments. I'm a 16 ga fan and will be extremely disaaponted if everything goes the steel way.
Unfotunately people seem to wrangle their way into power, and then inflict their personal views upon everyone.
I'm just hoping longish term common sense will prevail and the status quo will remain.
Gun City has a large number of Rizzini shotguns in sub gauge including 16, 28 and 410 ga.
There are side plate, round action field models as well as trap skeet etc.
Could be just what you are looking at in 28!!
Found What I want
Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting 28ga 30 inch barrels (or maybe 32 inch)
Can only imagine the cost here as retails in the US for $3595
How ever would need to try before buying which might be a little difficult.
Hayes and Associate who import FAIR shotguns give you the option of having one built to your "measured fit" but not sure who here in NZ can do the measuring?
Anyway something like this

No idea how old you s are but any how having done similar have learnt mainstream is so much easier like it or lump it It's the truth or wouldn't be mainstream cos it's mainstream cos it works Chances are today you ll disagree but numbers are against you It's Just the generation but you ll out grow it No offence intended just the way it is. Sub cals for kids training wicked as !! $3595 for that ?
Righttttttt !
I think they want those guns because they like them. I'd like a nice 12G SxS.
Fair Comment, although I have been shotgunning with subgauges for lat 15 years and had my firearms licence for close to 30, and apart from 3 gun competition (12 is king for that ) I have no plans to go back to 12g for anything else. I cop a lot of good natured ribbing at the club shooting my 20 but doesn't bother me at all.
I like nice firearms particularly shotguns, quality ones which will last and can be passed down. I also prefer to use lead
With you on that Like and prefer lead Not gonna be the choice of us unfortunately though long term. Love shooting ducks with lead for sure !! Generational shotguns. Yes please. !!
Grasshopper, go to the next skeet shoot in your area, take a calculator, walk along the rack and find out values.
You are in for one hell of a shock. At some/a lot of shoots it looks something like
10G 30G 5G 3G etc.
5ish nz for a gun of that quality is nothing.
Of course there is a lot less chance of being caught shooting lead if you shoot off season......
I have found you generally get what you pay for. even the most ardent duck hunters gunis never going to see the same volume of ammo.
When I did use a 12 my favorite duck load was a home loaded 1 1/8oz of 4's in black ranger cases. My gun was a Winchester 101 U/O which I still wish I never sold
I gave my diamond grade one of them to a fucking good mate. Don't even think the prick has used it yet :D
Ummm WH ... Coukld never mistake me for a grasshopper unless it was a big fat one ..Topic was ammo for water fowl not skeet shooting. Im well aware of the equipment values people use for skeet and clays.
My point was that use of lead in sub guages will be prohibited sometime in the near future country wide. Folks are saying bugger that makes my sub guage looking to possibly become unsuitable..
Got mates who use them currently with lead and they enjoy it plus have outstanding success.
So my point was also why spend that sort of money now if you re aim is to shoot ducks only with it ?
Steel shot ammo will be expensive for a while at least Id say.
Cant shoot ducks outside of season here... We d get potted so quickly up here it d be Hi Ho Hi Ho off to court I go ..ha ha
This will sound stupid but I highly doubt a $30,000 shotgun is going to make you a better shooter. I bought a $20 side by side for my first gun had no bead had a broken fore grip I just heal on with sellotape until I fixed it. I was deadly with that gun I wish I never got rid of it. Some of the $30,000 has to be just so you can say its better then any gun cheaper.
