Question Any spearfisherman on the forum?

    Hi all,
Just putting a post up to see if there are any spearos around on the forum, particularly in Christchurch? Would be good to have a thread to share info/stories if there are a few people keen. I am relatively new to hunting and keen to do more but diving and spearfishing is my bread and butter.
    Cheers

Yes, a beginner. I've been a beginner for about 5 years

Don't do that much, but enjoy it when I do. Rod and line fishing is the way I feed my family.

I’m kind of the reverse, hunting is my bread and butter and although I grew up scuba diving for scallops and crays, I have started doing a bit of spear fishing during the summer month’s now too

I’m a keen spearo. Not based your way though. Been rod fishing all my life & dad started taking me out for some snorkelling/spearfishing when I was around 10yrs old. Got into it seriously when I started uni back around 2007 or so. In the 10yrs I spent in Dunedin spearfishing was my main source of wild protein year round, with some rod fishing thrown in (did tons of fly fishing but mostly catch & release for trout). Got into hunting around 2015. Between the rods, spear & rifle now we eat pretty well pretty consistently.

Keen Spearo for over 20 yrs but living in Central Otago has dried my gills out. The Fish and Game wardens seem to get very excited when I mention is it possible to do some drifts and spearing in the Twizel canals.
Get into it though, awesome sport and like Pixie said it's a great way to consistently put fish on the table.

Yea within my flat we have 3 divers and 3 hunters so we are always having a venison, fish and crays. Save a bit of $$ too as meat is usually the expensive part of the meal. Hell of a lot more fun than going to the supermarket too

Worked at a dive school for a bit, and got really annoyed with being on the water all dav just for a couple of hours in the water. Threw in the towel and took up freediving, and haven't looked back. That was 30 years ago, and still spending as much time as possible in the water. Make spearguns as a side hustle, so I'm always tinkering.
It's a tough decision now between going for a hunt or getting on the water. Shooting rabbits at night and spearfishing through the day just seemed like a good compromise
    Not Chch based tho.

Keen spearo in northland here (definitely not Auckland, but still locked down with those mugs). Been doing it for 15 odd years, manage to rustle up a feed when I make the time to get out. Getting out seems to be the hard bit recently, with a 2yr old, a second due in 6 weeks and lockdowns.

Bop spearo here. There's a couple of us on the forum. Run a relatively large spearfishing club, never go diving because I work all the bloody time.

Auckland based spearo here, (definitely not Northland),
Always keen to dive with new people and with those that enjoy collecting seafood for a feed not glory.
