you need to have a good sounder and also preferably a chart plotter and know how to use it because you have to find the fish unlike bait and burley where you just a fishy looking spot sit and wait
once you find a school on the sounder you need to work out with the wind an tide which way your going to drift and set the boat up so it drifts back over the school this is where the chart plotter comes in handy as you can set up tracks etc to help you
if your drifting fast a sea anchor will slow you down you want nice slow drift
cast in the direction your drifting the idea is to have the bait hit the bottom under the boat
work the bait with little twitches you don't need big moves its not jigging
only use a big enough jig head to get to the bottom under the boat the
also don't be afraid to use small hooks I only use 1/0 -3/0 max the fish hooked in the lips or jaw so there's no need for a massive hook
the smaller the hook the better your bait will be presented
fishing at anchor with soft baits is not recommended for best results however ive found it can work will if there's a little bit of current
I fish with a shimano thunnis 4000ci4 spooled with 20lb braid and use 20lb fluorocarbon most people would say that's to big and I tend to agree but I'm a strayline fisherman 1st and foremost so I needed something I could use for both and the 4000 thunnis has the bait runner feature we all know and love for straylineing
Why cant you burly fish in?

:oh noes:
Doesn't look too flash for the gong comp either. @mikee. Hope you got a good raincoat
there is no point drifting with burly in my opinion as you are always moving away from the trail
having said that as gibo says i also find they work OK on anchor as long as theres some current (not too much just a little) i cast a softy out into the the burly trail and put it in the rod holder and let the swell/chop work the lure while im bait fishing
9 times out of 10 it will get garbed
Yes at anchor of course for burlying.

if your going to anchor and burley dont bother with soft baits, they need to be worked to get best effect which is tedious and non productive at anchor
go back to strip baits and flick the bait runner on
Why does the saying pig islander mean and why is it offensive?
It is not offensive, unless one is a racist pig.
New Zealand forgets to name islands for 200 years | Metro News
Because north islanders have sensitive feelings! And a disturbing fasanation for sheep! ;)
Yep i never realy "fish" soft baits at anchor however as per my last post if theres one set up on the boat already to go ill chuck it in the rod holder and quite often get a fish or two on it but i never anchor with the intention of fishing soft bait
Drifting is the way to go when fishing any lure/jig/ slow jig soft bait... the only time i fish bait on the drift is deep drops for kings all my bait fishing for snapper is done at anchor
yea man i agree
if you got a good berley trail you can pull tons of kahawai out of if off the surface using softbaits if the snapper are slow to come on
So I handed over a wad of cash today.
Nothing like a bit of retail therapy.

Spooled with 10pound 8 strand and got some 20p flourocarbon for trace.
Got a heap of baits in the mail box thanks to @stingray so I am ready to go as soon as I can teach myself to tie a PR knot.
How far ahead do you guys usually cast?
I tied a 1oz hook hook to the braid and gave it a flick at work and it went about 4 times further than I was expecting and instead of landing in the carpark next door it went over the apex of the roof of the big building before i shut the bail!!
Caught the gutter on the retreive and just like that I had lost my first hook without even wetting a line.[emoji3]

Ask @BRADS:D
Don't think I have seen a baitrunner type reel used for SB fishing before.
PR is a goody, but I find a back to back uni knot does the job for me.
Could be worse, you could be English.:)
Whoops no offence meant Pengy, just something Scouser said the other day.
Il give Big Blue a plug here too.
Always manage to get a bit of a discount unlike that big green shop.
Ha ha VC that cracked me up. Bugger those pr and uni bullshit knots on this one mate. Shes light gear so can downgrade the knot a bit .
Albright knot is all you need and easy as pie. You are welcome. What i do is double the braid give it a lick and youre off racing
Actually just looked at ghe albright and the one i tie is slightly different.
Make a loop in the fluro trace, squash the loop so the bend is nice and sharp. Double the braid and lick it to make it like one, good length to get you going, then put the braid through the loop in the mono and go past a bit, start wrapping the loop with the braid, try keep it laying even as you come back toward the fluro loop, then poke the braid vack yhrough the fluro loop and pull up, slowly does it as the knot tightens onto yhe fluro loop. Easy ;)
Sweet Ill give that a try, got a pr on there at the mo so I will wait till I bust that off(first cast?:slow: ) and give it a go.
The pr wasnt actually that difficult tho while watching utube and it is a sexy slim knot for threw the guides, be a different story on board and wanting the line back in the water pronto tho.
Yeah the pr is cool, the fg may be better for softy. That knot i drew has never ever broke on me and i can tie it in a minute or two. Pr is like ten bloody minutes if im lucky ha ha, im fussy but so redo them if one hitch is not right
I drew that wrong bro, gimme a minute
Top one. Had to grab some string and have a fiddle
