And I have a Calcutta 200H sitting gathering dust if you would like a lightweight but grunty overhead to try out.
Ask a few salmon fishermen if they are any good for casting.
shimano gear is fine, Im up to three soft bait sets as I use them for catching my livies as well these days
I like berkley dropshot rods, length is good the short ones are for kayak fishing so you can reach your fish easier (not much use outside a kayak)
I actually like my cheepest softbait reel the most as it was smoothest, even tho it has the least bearings its an old nexave so $50 reel
Attachment 49602
caught by my missus on the $50 nexave reel
forget stella or saltiga unless you are looking to spend silly money
go for the least weight needed to get you to the bottom while casting ahead when drifting, usually 1/2 oz in under 20m
usually you get your fish on the drop or as it hits the bottom
for softbaits just try a few different types, 5inch matches well to 1/2oz I like jerk shards and wigly tail ones. i use mostly Zman as they last way longer than gulp
I havent noticed any difference with using secret sauce, but i use it when things get quiet
on the bright side for you southerners blue cod seem to smash my softies
slow drifts are good and drogues are sometimes needed
softbaits work easily as well as lures bieng towed by the boat, but when you catch kahawai keep the rod tip in the water if you think the fish is about to jump as thats when they throw the hook
The fish I catch are all on real bait ,don't think polluting the the fishery with more plastic is good for the eco-system or other marine animals.
You keep your plastic garbage down there ,just make sure to clean up the resulting mess & litter on the fore shore.
Gulps are made from egg protien chris
Why do they call them soft plastic then ?
Berkley gulp dont. They are 100% biodegradable. Others are plastic but i use the berkley ones exclusively. In saying that the formaldehyde cant be good
Yea they call them soft baits not plastics.

They say a car tire is completely biodegradable too if you give a million years or so .So how biodegradable are they ?
As for being referred to as "Pig islanders" is a bit offensive unless thats intended of course.
I'd say they would break down a lot fasted that all the mono, braid, hooks, swivels, plastic and lead that's lost in the ocean. Any fisherman that says he doesn't litter is all shit.
The Pig Islanders part was VC trying to be funny but seems some woke on the wrong side?
It wasn't funny when I lived in the SI either & was intended to be offensive .Maybe some people need to learn some manners & not make statement
like that on a public forum ,or is it they got out of bed on the wrong side. Certainly seem to have an inferiority complex them live down there.
