    Beach fishing

Wifes birthday this weekend so we dropped the kids at the grandparents and snuck away to a beach for the weekend, we were doing the walk along the beach thing and I got to thinking about how nice it would be to be fishing there today.

When does beach fishing kick off, it's not somthing I know much about. Is it a all year kind of thing or just certain months, I have done lots of fishing but always from a boat so my thoughts would be summer autumn, but what do you guys think, worth a go during winter or wasting time, up northland if that helps.

From my experience, northland produces earlier than the BOP. Give it a go as you never know. WBOP has lots of Kahawai starting about September onwards, kingis start about November in the Waihi beach area. Tauranga harbour really fires late Jan thru to March with noticeable drop off about April. Others may challenge this info, but comments based on my calendar.

I haven't had much luck landbased east coast around whangarei, though kingys off urqharts and bream head aren't uncommon. marsden wharf gets hammered by the imports. there's a couple holes under the refinery wharf that'll hold snapper and you can usually pull kahawai from there down to bream tail, when they're running.
Ruakaka's been full of crabs every time I've been there which will strip even floating baits. Go for a hikoi south of waipu cove and fish off the rocks, it's the only fould ground around for ages.
Peach cove can produce, Ocean beach and Pataua north are fun but not great fishing. north of Whananaki around the rocks can be good but very exposed and tidal access.

Winter fishing you tend to get fewer big moochers than heaps of little hookups.

But the govt has f*cked the fisheries, selling them by the tonne.
