    Early season trout fishing

Preface: I literally only started fishing - spinning - in NZ in July thanks to a pal kindly gifting me his gear, with no idea what I was doing - no clue about seasons, fish biology, local regs, nothing.

I'm as newbie as newbies can be, wet behind the ears, a clueless idiot ... but keen to learn.

Fishing at the end of July was a washout for me: due to rain in the ranges, the local rivers mostly too cloudy for the fish to see even my most lurid of lures. So eventually I got the message and took a break.

    What now?

It has rained heavily again the past few days and the local rivers are again high and cloudy as an Ouzo and ice ... so I guess there's not much doin'. Also, I suspect any trout hereabouts (Napier/Hastings) are generally shagged after a successful spawn upriver, and presumably not worth the effort.

So, when does the new season pick up hereabouts? Any tips on when, where & how to spin for trout for this L-plater, please?

Send me a pm and I can give you detailed info,

I have fished right through winter and there are plenty of trout about.

Bloody top bloke alright! I thoroughly enjoyed a master class around HB with the prof yesterday, showing more than telling me what to do. It'll take me a few days to process all the info - loads to ponder as I practice those nifty flick casts and annoy some trout. Woke up this morning with cheery thoughts of slipping away to the river at dawn. I'm hooked. Thanks prof.
