Thread: Family fishing licence

My neighbour was telling me today how the so called family fishing licence works...apparently the principle holder has to be present when say any of the other members are fishing...seems a bit unfair if, say, father was the principle holder and at work (during the school holidays) means that mother and children cannot go fishing...I would have thought that as it is a 'family' licence anyone of the listed family members should be entitled to fish on that licence (in the absence of the principle holder). Seems pretty mean to me especially when all are encouraged to get the young ones out there.

That is correct.
The primary licence holder must be present if the other named family members are fishing. Not necessarily shoulder to shoulder but close enough to point out in the case of a ranger doing a licence check.

It'd be cool if there was little tags that tore off but then it'd just be a cheap single licence. Though it'd be nice if it worked that way with the price them

Pretty sure the child's license is a pittance cost should they want to fish solo. I think it is just so that Dad (or Mum) isn't on the wrong side of the fence should little Johnny want to come out on the river/lake and can cover all family members. Long time since I looked into it though.

You can get day licence's for familys its an exspensive way to go about your scenario but can be done.Either way when you buy the licence you agree to the condition's as soon as you sign ,it like Munsey said under 12's are free so that's encouragement enough in my book.

I stopped buying licences all together, the amount of fish and money spent on gear and the actual fish caught(Im a shit fisherman) didnt bring good returns.

I have which is why I'm asking, I was catching kahawai and got a trout I threw it back but yeah. Should add that I was above the bridge so it was in a trout fishing area

Bit like using lead in the shotty Toby. If you were right up the Ruakituri and said you're fishing for kahawai then you're up shit creek but in your instance as long as you put it back then no foul. Same as being on the duck pond with 12g lead and saying you're waiting for the rabbits to come out! Depends on the circumstance.
