That pain is caused by the weight of the water above and around you squeezing the air in your inner ear. The solution lays in equalising the pressure (repeatedly as you descend deeper) by forcing air from your throat through your Eustachian tubes (which connect the middle ear to the nasal sinus cavity) by conducting the valsalva manoeuvre (forcing air through a closed airway). My god, the shit I remember from my Divemaster days.
