A Xmas story(well Boxing Day) woke to my alarm, turned it off to wake up a hour later to a voice asking “ are ya coming ? “
Shit!! out of bed , into cloths , gear into the boat and away we went got to the ramp to find we were the last one on the water, shot out on glassy conditions, and more epic vis!
Geared up and in the water hit a bit of prospect turf , holes and cracks and caves but it wasn’t fishy even lacked resident cod and wrase,
Moved spots same again plenty of likely turf but only the odd short to see, plus a hand full of of carpet shark lurking in holes and caves.
Got in the boat again and the skipper looks around ..no boats about so drops me on the “ nest” a rock we found early in the spring. Looking from above it looks like a nothing boulder , but underneath is a maze of cracks and caves and of hangs, and folks were home …
Now I’m not going to lie to you and tell you I’m a good diver, I certainly tits up a couple of crays that I should have sacked, but then I ran into 3 crays fighting to get back into a crack and then realised they were stuck in a dead end cave so sacked two and the last one was jammed up and at the end of my reach. So was patting myself on the back only to completely tits the next one …then I scored a good keeper well back in the hole and then things went sideways so as I was sacking the good cray the one in the sack decided it was getting out..
So I’ve got a cray in me hand another jammed between my legs ( not highly recommended) trying to get shit sorted chewing air like I was swimming at the Olympics the one I’m holding onto is jamming a fighting claw into my thumb and the one between my legs is getting pretty upset, talk about amateur hour, what a bloody shambles!
Order was restored along with my dignity, got on with the diving sacked another check my gauges to see I was down to the red, so pulled the pin on an epic dive.
VC asks are the any left to hunt ..na I said I terrified damn near all of them, so we shifted marks and got VC in the water ,he came out swinging hitting crays and then surprisingly asked for his spear gun then he went cod mudering with a beauty pausing 40 cm , he saw a handful of crays and worked a lot of turf …
Got in the boat and we retrieved the insurance policy , first hook a lovely carrot second hook a fat as brim , next hook a starfish then another , the rest of the line was empty , so all in all a epic day out.
Thank you VC for you cunning ideas and bloody fantastic skippering!
What a day! Cheers Cam
