Fly fishing help
What types of flys will I want to use in dirtyish water? Mainly targeting kahawai but I know trout are down here tok. Was thinking a whitebait looking fly but the white may be hard to see in dirty water. Also what kind of insects are around this time of the year. I have some cool spiders nd crickets but not sure it is the right time of the year to use them
-
Wrong time of year for a lot of insects. For Kahawai any thing shiney some times the dirty water will make it trickey but worth the wait on a fly rod!!!
-
Try running a grey ghost always a good fall back in dirty water.
-
Thanks, I'll have to google what a grey ghost looks like though

My go-to estuary/river mouth fly is a Fritz, basically a Wooly Bugger tied using sparkle chenille
Good colours are white, lime green, and black with a uv blue highlight.
Variations include dumbbell eyes and buck tail for longer/more durable tails.
Tie some red thread behind the bead/dumbbell to simulate gills

I'll take a photo of the ones I have on me atm, dad has some more in his car as well, I'll try nab them when he gets back for lunch

Streamers are what you need to buy , grey ghost is perfect , represents a smelt ( silvery) . If you search trade me you should be able to buy streamer packs . In the south they used for sea run trout and salmon
-
Theres a whitebait fly in the car. Also one in the shed although it seems like something I'd troll with the kayak. I was thinking of shooting a plover and taking some white feathers to make a smelt looking one
-
Put them all on Toby, except the drys, and keep using the one that catches the first fish!
-
I asked dad if when he comes home for lunch tomorrow can he take me to the beach and I'll take the bike to the bar and he can pick me back up when he finishes up. Could be a decent chance at getting something.

Dark water dark fly. Clear water, clear fly. Easy
-
Think I can remember that. Is there a reason for that?
-
Those big orange & green rabbits will be your go to in darker water. The olive wolly bugger will also work. If you're around kahawai country, bigger is better. 2+ hooks. Fish the edges of quieter water when the river has a bit of colour.
A fish will eat another up to 10% it's own size. Makes a 5lb kahawai fun when scragged through the neck and kingis are lurking.

Easy to see, often wonder when jigging at 30 metres in Taupo, how a trout picks a certain fly in the dark, or if it vibration and movement. But the yell pick the ginger mick every time doesn't matter the mix.
