Ideally I would like to catch one land based but that sounds to easy.

After watching big angry fish a few weeks ago I would say Vanuatu would be a good option though don't know what time of the year is best. I know a very good Hawaiian Captain living in Taveuni Fiji that has also caught over 1000 GTs so there are options Google Makaira by the Sea for Fiji or Capt. John Llanes

Aututaki lagoon is very good for lots of game fish. GT's. Bonefish, Sailfish, Tuna, Mahimahi. If I was looking thats where I'd start for an all out holiday with fishing. Last time I was in Raro I sweet talked a commercial guy to letting me come out with him. All fish caught on rods and by the end the guy trusted me enough to deal to it all myself. He had a setup where they could steer up front with a rudder. They would pursue mahimahi with a speer off the bow solo. Also he had a motobike helmet with a lantern on top. He reckoned he'd go out at night and flying fish would fly at the lamp and he'd try catch it with a net.

That Last vid is where Captain Moko (fishing charter operator in the red hard top ) throws his fish bodies in , kind of tame . Best thing to do if you go to Raro is go to the wharf where the charter boats are , go to opposite end just before evening . About that time a small fleet of 12 ft over powered runabouts prepare to go out chasing flying fish . They leave on dark the GTs compete with them for the flying fish . Next time I go I'm going to as one of the guys to take me fishing just for GTS . Last time I crewed (well spectated) on the back of one of the boats , massive GTS where smashing the flying fish that we where herding up , it was pitch black and they use big LED lights on crash helmets . The breakwater just behind the wharf would be where Id try for a land based try , there where heaps when went out .

Thats the boats , they did have spears on board as well . I payed $40 bucks ( his fuel ) to take me out . Got about 200 flying fish , they sell them 6 for $10 .

While snorkeling at the fruits of Rarotonga a few years ago, I had a loaf of bread with me that I was feeding out to attract little fish to me, bloody near shat myself when a very large GT started circling me and would race in towards me every now and then to get his share. Big powerful looking fish.

Depends if how serious you are?

I have chased them in a few Islands, mainly due to budget I haven't been where I want to go which would be...with NOMAD in Aussie on a mothership fishing from a tender each day, or New Caledonia. You have a real chance of fish over 45-50 kg in those places.

I have caught fish that size in lesser places but they were after 1000's of casts, which you could argue made it more worth while. Also we caught a decent dogtooth, Bluefin trevally (lupo), MU (an arsehole red snapper thing) barracuda etc. Highlight was yellowfin tuna casting stick baits too.

They are great fish, but I rate a 25kg kingfish on a stick bait in 15m of water as comparable easily. Some may see it different but none of us had any issues landing big GT's

If you are on a budget, don't like crowds then Kurt is your man. Passionate fisherman and you can watch the pigs come through when the tides out followed by the dogs along the reef.

Would be bale to fulfil your land based desire too.
