    Good weekend surfcasting

Didnt catch anything worth eating, but a good weekend none the less. Just fishing off the beach down Ashburton, we got about 30? dog fish and 4 decent red cods which we put back as wasnt keen on eating them

You can catch all sorts depending on the season, kawhai, 7 gill sharks, sea run trout and salmon closer to the mouth when in season, the odd elephant fish as well i think. Better fishing closer to the mouth but your not aloud to fish inside 200m of the mouth this time of year

Thought those cod where good eaters ? Shame to throw them back but the skinny ones probably have worm so best to discard them.
Good size doggies are OK but need to trunk them pretty soon after catching & skin them before cooking.Just like any shark .

We a bit spoiled up here still catching snapper off the beach.Nice 2.5kg panie last night which will be dinner tonight.
Busted off by what I think was a shark ,then a ray smoked me shortly after that but peeled 250m of line 1st.

You should have swum after your line Chris. Bloody Ray doesn't need it.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!

I recommend every one own a scaling tool, available @ H&F saves a lot of work & spiked fingers / blood loss.Snapper spikes can be crewel

I only scale if intending to cook or smoke skin on.

You're onto it VC ,cooking snapper with skin on keeps the fish moist & improves flavor .
Always smoke with skin on but I don't scale them.

You can eat pretty much anything if you cook it,Im not a huge fan of red cod but it is definitely edible.

Any of your cod ,including Hewihewi(rock cod) ugly as they are make very good fish cakes.
Throw them in a pot & steam them, easier than trying to fillet especially the Hewihewi.

Caught a good size School shark last night ,pretty chuffed landing another over the hundy pound on 10kg line.
Bit off in shore wash but dragged up onto dry by tail .Trunked out to carry & even pick up off sand.
Will be picked up shortly ,always some one will take them off your hands .
