    The internet put me crook

So home from work and waiting for my brother in law to drop my trailer back so I could go fishing I had a search for Rig nets.
Got side tracked and onto flounder where I read that summer is the best time for floundering.....interesting I thought, floundering is what every one does in winter around here.
Tides are good so off I go to soak the net, I got and hour of out and a hour of in on good tides.
Over winter this would virtually guarantee at least 2 flounder but more likely 6-12 of em.

I got exactly nothing...not even my nemesis the Kahawai!

Hi Cam, I catch more in the spring, early September is the flush. According to the commercial Fisherman up here the flounder winter in the deeper water travel into the shallows and spawn spring, summer and exit the Firth in early winter.

I think most of our fish must head up the river in summer because there is not as many fish in our bays then.

In saying that I will still fish with reasonable success until end of may.

PS the flounder spearmen are still waiting for the fish to come into the real shallow water.

    Interesting.
I think the tell tale was there was no other nets out at all where as from late autumn to spring they are everywhere.

If you are targeting flounder and set your net for them alone, you should not be catching kahawai as a by-catch.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

Yes you are right, mainly a problem as it started to warm this spring.
I set at the head of a channel(but not completely blocking it) in knee deep water when the low tides are good, so anything around on the first push of the tide is caught. sometimes there is a school of them Kahawai

Do you tie your net down (float to lead line) or let it hang free?...what depth of water at high tide?

would be 5m at high tide, I don't tie it down because i can only leave it there for an hour or two at the most before it is full of weed so it doesn't come up full hight anyway.
