Thread: Jigging setup advice

After a setup to jig for the odd kingfish they may be around.

Do i need a specific jig reel etc or can i get away with say a tld 15 with 15kg line on a 15kg rod, that way i can strayline etc with it?

Any advise would be helpful

You can definitely use a setup like that but it won't be ideal. With Kingfish, the faster you can get the lure moving the better and the TLD15 doesn't have a super fast retrieve or a super strong drag. No problem for your average school kingie but it will struggle to stop the 20kg+ models
If by 15kg line you mean mono, I would be inclined to top-shot it with some 50lb- 65lb braid and a 100lb flurocarbon leader. All comes down to how much you want to spend to get a more specialist setup.

It's easier to strayline with a jig setup than jig with a strayline setup. Having said that, everything is possible despite tackle shop "advice". It would be hard to jig with mono on the reel though, but if you have braid, give it a go and see how you get on. Nothing to lose. Ideally, have a go on a mate's dedicated jigging rod.

You will tire quickly jigging a TLD all day. Jigging sets are small and light but built to handle big fish over and over again.

Braid as said is a must, trying to jig on mono in 50-120 metres would be frustrating as all hell, the line stretches, its fat and bulky and when you get a bite you may not get a good solid hook set due to the stretch.

If you are wanting a strayline jigging combo then I would look at a spin reel with braid (50-80lb) and just swap the traces out depending on target species. I know a few guys straylining fort snapper using braid.

Agreed about the mono, it would suck trying to jig with it due to to the stretch and a 15 kg straylining rod would be difficult to really put the hurt on a king or mechanical jig with . Also you can get braid that is coloured every 10 m so you can tell if you're getting your jigs are to where the kings are on your sounder .

My jig setup is a trinidad 40n on a PE5 Reel rods spiral wrap jig rod, it also doubles as my deepwater setup for puka or king tarakihi so while it might not double up as a straylining setup it still covers another situation.

I love jigging but its not a cheap sport, if you keep and eye out on tardme you can pick up bargains from people who try it and find out its hard work compared to putting your feet up and leaving a rod in the holder with a livie out.

Does anyone hire out decent jigging gear these days? Might be a cheaper option to see if you like it in the first place?

Or go on a charter than supplies everything and puts you on the fish.

I third the position that using a TLD25 will be just an exercise in frustration.

Give it a crack with the TLD 15 see if you like it, I used my TLD30 when I first started, quickly got the bug and went to a specific setup.

I've got budget setup with a Jig king 450gm rod & Fin Nor LT100 spinning reel, 50lb braid & 80lb leader, complete setup was around $550.
Put a extra meter of leader on as you'll need to snip a bit off & retie after a tough fish or cuda.
Can jig reasonably deep with that setup, only thing I've had to do was replace the bail arm bearing from a salt water dunk in the salt on a 3 day charter.

Crack up a tough fish up here would ping your 80lb leader first run

catching sharks up your ways? haha.

been through a few brands of leaders, 80lb moimoi xtra hard is what I found works best.

I strayline with my basic jigging setup.

Works super well for straylining, clicker creates enough tension to hold in big current and I like being able to control the set by gradually winding drag on.
