Did a bit of research on the name @Dundee.
Many years ago people from Ngati Kahungunu from Wairoa heard there was heaps of food to found around Porangahau..They headed there but found wasn't much food to be had, so turnt around and headed home hungry. They turnt up at Hikaweras pa near Omahu.
Hikawera didn't want them to return to Wairoa hungry, so killed 70 dogs to feed the travellers.
They cooked them in the ovens at a place by the river called Te Umukuri (ovens where dogs were cooked). They threw the offal from the dogs in the river b4 the feast.
Tutaekuri - the offal of the dogs..
Last time I was there there caught plenty of trout, should've bought my lucky trout spotting dog..good day tho 🖒🖒
