    learn how to catch trout

I've always wanted to learn how to fly fish/freshwater fish, having recently lived in Canterbury has reinforced this.

But as I live in the Waikato, I don't know anyone who's into it.
I've hardly done any sea fishing either, so have no idea where to start.

How do you lot recommend to learn?
Did you get lessons, or find someone to teach you? Or should I watch a heap of Youtube and just give it a crack?

    Cheers

Its a lot like learning golf. Painful

A club will be the best start if you do not know anyone immediately.

If you don't want to join a club then it could be worth starting by getting a rod watchig a few vids on youtube on how to cast then go outside and cast at things. A hula hop would be a go'er just practice at different ranges. Once you start nailing it most of the time then ask on the forum and I'm sure someone will tell you what fly for the area and time of day and such. Then its a simple matter of getting a trout licence and getting out there doing it

I am not an overly experienced fisherman and am myself just starting to get in to trout/fly fishing. I like the idea of spin fishing to start with as the casting will be easier to master and you'll have one less thing to worry about initially. There should be some good rivers near where you are. A friend has fished the Tairua River successfully and I am keen to try some rivers around Karangahake Gorge this summer.

I was in the Karanahake gorge the other day and thought surely there is trout in here.
Think I'll try get in contact with a club, as I'd have no idea where to start when it comes to rods, lures and flys etc

Get some cheap gear, get a good book, illustrated, get out on some flat grass and practice, cut the hook and barb off the practice fly, when you can cast without a tangle or a fly in the ear, and get a little distance, then find a river and get wet. I found dry fly was good to start with as I could see where and how it was landing on the water, find a rising fish and if the books good you should have some idea of what to throw at it. First ones the worse, remember to keep the tip up, everything after that is trial and error.

Always practice with a bit of anything at the end of your leader. A pinch of wool will do. With nothing at the end you will damage your fly line.
Self taught fly casting is really hard work. I suggest you try to find some help, it will accelerate your learning and save you a lot of heartache.
It may be a bit more outlay but the little Echo practice rods are cool and a good learning tool Echo practice rod. Heaps smaller than your main rod and you can practice anywhere.
Stu's is a good website in general for a insight into a mad trout fisherman.

I have decided to resurrect this thread.

I have just been offered a job in Auckland so will be moving up there very soon.
Any places near Auckland that'd be good for me to have a go at a few trout, and/or any good angler clubs up there?
