    Immediate thoughts
1 Official approaches angler on side of steam and asks to see fishing licence.
    2 Angler produces standard licence.
3 Official doubts from the shape/colour/height/ name that angler is a resident of New Zealand and asks angler to produce evidence of residency status.
    4. Official is promptly propelled into stream by 4 th generation New Zealander

AND of course, those who want to rort the system, will arrange for their travel agents. fishing guides , cuzzie bros, to buy the standard licence for them in their name.

I'm for it. I've met a lot of overseas anglers who to be fair buy a full season because (even though they are only here for a couple of weeks) are quite used to paying non-resident licences at higher prices, want to help our fisheries and find it a small price to pay in the total overall cost of getting here.
On the other hand there are quite a lot of bums coming here who live in abject poverty while enjoying our precious resource, they eat 2min noodles, shit on the riverbank beside their crappy backpacker cars and don't contribute anything to our fisheries.

Every year my father in law comes for a month I buy a full season licence for him for the benefit of the fishery and the daily licence is the only other option. I won't mind paying more for him. He pays as much for a week in Austria as we pay here for a year.

I came to NZ fished for 4 days bought a annual license, spent $6000 over a month, supporting your tourist industry, and now you want me to pay more, as I,m a visitor, or I could go to Alaska/ Russia buy a license for half the price of a NZ license, live a lot cheaper and get there quicker.
This has more to do with politics than investment in fisheries , if you really want to invest in fisheries, put a tax on fishing/hunting equipment, like they do in most states in the USA and ring fence that money, O I forgot that will not get you votes.

Very short sighted, if fact just plain dumb... Tourist dollars will go elsewhere.

If they want to encourage angling tourists, having a discounted license somewhere between the day license and full season license would be good. Unlikely that a tourist would be here for more than 2 months.

Namibia started charging non resident fees for their national parks etc, I just stopped going there...

This has come about because the NZ angler asked for it. When you are fishing some of the more high profile areas Resident angler to Non resident conflict of using the waterways happens. It's the resident angler who pays a lot more in the end for his fishing than the non-resident. Fish up in the main headwaters of some of our trophy rivers and see the pressure that is put on this resource. If you hunt / fish most other parts of the world this extra charge is there. Yeah go beat your drum about anglers dollars etc but what's the cost of Gardia and Didymo to our waterways.

Maybe they need the extra to make up for massive loss of funds from Waikato Duck shooters licence fees ???

What does this have to do with non-resident anglers ? Or do you believe they are they ones spreading Didymo ?

where did didymo and giardia come from? Overseas anglers. You pay rates to your different environment councils, I pay 2 different lots of ratings ,1 to environment Waikato and 1 to environment Bop. I also pay 2 lots local council rates and government tax's to pay for ramps, roading, flood protection and fencing around DOC and recreation areas, I pay tax money to doc to so call look after our wilderness areas where most resident anglers won't fish but non residents will. Just a few extra payment I make as opposed to the non resident fisher. lets not start on emergency services that our non-resident , fisher tramper uses.

I've bought a fishing licence every year since old enough and a gamebird licence also. F&G have drunk some coin off me and I have never seen a ranger and the river I fish mainly is not stocked by F&G and the birds I shoot are on private land mainly mallards and parries.

Cheap entertainment and good value. I read how much you fish and shoot and boy you would get more out of your licences than anybody I know. I'm a F/G ranger ,have been for 20yrs. I give up 1 weekend every year for training, I spent countless hours ranging for poachers and checking licences. Every year for last 20yrs I BUY my licences, I don't get any hunting access or shooting rights, no more than any one else. Why do I do it ?? It's because I want to protect what's ours and to sustain for future user's. Mybe you and Toby can invite down for a shoot hunt and then I can do a licence check on both of you, apparently he hasn't been checked either. haha

Any time your down this way GA you are most welcome could even go for a fish but they won't be up to the Tarawera standard.
