My mate did about a month ago because of the line at wanganui. He said its sweet on a flat day but can get very dodgy if it chops up out there

My mate owns the farm south of the patea river, i have fished off the breakwater and watched boats goout there. Some were either brave or stoopid. Good fishing a couple miles offshore
I can't offer advice, but can recall trips out over that bar in the mid-1970's in a mates dads boat. He had a Haines Hunter V163 with a 80hp outboard, and the other chap who he used to go out with had a 15 foot Plylite Fisherman with a 50hp. Small setups compared to today's average boat. I recall time spent inside the bar circling until it looked ok-ish, and then going for it!!
We cross on a regular basis it can be extreme at best what size boat are you using.
Be prepared to turn back as sometimes the sea is great and the bar is huge.
No problem with hitting the bottom like some.

Thanks. Much as I suspected after viewing the guy on YouTube cock it up on the way in... Not sure I'm there yet, or the boat is.... I'm just real keen to look at the traps or Graham bank....

The fishing and diving is awesome we head up north off hawera or there about.
The traps can be busy, seems to be a lot of boats from wanganui come up that way as well.
Coming in is fine you just need power for the pressure waves. Go out just after low tide about 2 hours when the flow is still low.
