Rock fishing Google satellite view research tips

Hi all,

A couple of friends and I are looking at starting some rock fishing in/around Auckland, we have no boat access so do the occasional charter but they can get up there in price and a day on the rocks is nice either way! It would be nice to learn a couple of good spots to work in different conditions.

In starting out, of course there's the occasional recommendation that pops up from searching the internet, but most of the advice seems to point toward doing ones own research via google earth or similar which leads me to my question:

If you were doing such preliminary research, what would you look for? Just a rocky shore? Or is it a little more involved than that?
