Heard the same. Still heading up the Rangi near the end of feb for a fish (probably a waste of time as I have yet to catch a salmon in the upper rangi) and to shoot some yummy thar meat for the freezer.

What can I say, 2 of my uncles and my grandad had batches at the mouth of the Rangi on the north side. Sadly Grandad passed away and so did one of my uncles and batches sold. I lived there as well for a couple years after i left school.
Coming from a Salmon fishing family and having caught lots and lots and lots, means I kinda don't rate them as much as perhaps i should. I once filleted and battered a 30lb salmon for a party !!
Mum and dad chase the whitebait at the Rakaia mouth from August to Seasons end before packing up and moving the Caravan from the mouth to the gorge till the season finishes. They are at the gorge now.....................

I took this photo on the Waitaki 5 years ago, I have not been Salmon fishing with dad (and mum) since

I've never caught any because I'm not a fisherman but just wanted to say that they're a damn fine eating fish. Mmm mm mmm!
