Nice, smoked salmon!
Yeah mate… have taken 11 since the start of the season (April 16th)….these “springers” are fighters… big runs this season…we leave the natives(released 5 so far)and only take the returning hatchery fish….. plenty for all (limit is 20/person) but you are allowed 2 licenses ,making it 40)
Nice, looks tasty :)
2 weeks ago I was in Dunedin, green island was waiting by the creek and theres a bloody salmon trying jumping up the concrete flood protection... Can't say I'd want to eat it looking at the state of the creek all of 1m wide.
Your spot looks a lot nicer. 40fish / season would make for a lot of meals. Do you smoke most of it or freeze it?
Both…. But vacuum pack … and never let it sit too long…. Fresher the better….
Do a salmon bake for the mates…. Like to share the spoils…. Always the right thing to do
This one this morning… they are beauty’s… took 6 hrs ,but it was totally worth it…. The 15 minutes it took to get to the boat and watching my boy “ play the game” was so worth it… amazing what yr kids do
I sat there drinking a tinny whilst my boy “barked” orders at me ,to position the boat, get the net, don’t do that,do this,…. Magic…..

That's a fine looking fish.
Difference between the “Native”and “Hatchery”…. Is simple
If you look at the tail U can see the Anal fin ,right above that is the adipose fin… on the “native” fish they are apparent, still there…. On the “hatchery” fish the “adipose” fin has been removed before they are released into the wild as yearlings….. the fin doesn’t grow back
Big fines for taking native stock… it’s working ,the native numbers are coming back to life and the hatchery fish are exactly the same….. plenty for all…. It’s taken a while ,but it can only be a good thing
Nice fish, reminds me of the days on the Rakaia and the Waitaki rivers.
Had to throw this one back today… Native steelhead…. The rear adipose fin is still there… such a beautiful fish!!!

And the Rangitata. Those were my three childhood streams.
I grew up fishing all those 3 as well use to catch 30-40 salmon a year back then and a small 1 was 22ish lbs and use 2 get 1 every year over 35lbs
As we speak…. On the river this morning …. 5 in the boat so far.. looking for another
… allowed 2 a piece… myself and my 2 boys
U know what.. the bullshit never stops when it comes to bragging about who,s fish is the biggest, advice on how to play it… etc.. etc … the banter never stops……MAGIC!!!

Out with my Boys this am… fish are running …. Some nice spring chinook running now that the water is starting to warm
Yes, I remember well those days down the Rakaia mouth. 25 - 35 pound fish were the norm. Shoulder to shoulder with surprisingly few tangles, and Kahawai were a bloody nuisance
Well the state has shut down a shit of our favorite spots as the runs are really starting to pick up…they do this so that the numbers returning are strong, for good reason…. They have allowed a few spots to remain open… this is a stretch about 5km west of Portland on the Columbia river…. They gave us 2 days to fish… 2 a piece .. we have 5 … trying to catch the last one
Cut plug herring and cut plug plastics are working
Happy Days. Just found this thread. Nice fish all.
Looks like great fun
Years ago so many big salmon around,we d just let go 14-16pounders go down the Waitaki.
Nah mate…running 340 gram weights…bends the rod at 8 meters running downstream…..running 4 poles at varying depths to see where the fish are running,……the electronics on the boat paint a lot of fish…it just seems they bite at different levels.
Yesterday we were running the bait between 7-10 metres……8 metres seemed to be the honey spot
Quote ; Are they a surface lure or do you fish them on a downrigger?
Down riggers and leaders with weights …….
These boys don't know what pressured fish look like!!! Spring Chinook seem to bring the entire population of the northwestern US out the the Columbia...or at least 50,000 of em or so.
I'll be fishing the mud on the Snake for the next two days...gotta fish my favorite spot before I leave this land:D
Hey Joe…. Fuck off… who u calling “boys”… we fish what we have and what we can…. U don’t know me or what we do other than sone of this….we ocean fish, river fish ,crab ,run the snake, deschutes, salmon etc….. be careful who you bag or badmouth!!!
