Been offered a couple of used reels a TLD LRSA 50 or a TLD 30A , they are like new . Both come with a rod (15 -37 kg) and with braid . The guy want $300 & $250 for the 30 . Whats your thoughts , I have a mate who will take one off my hands so have to decide which is the best one ?.

The LRSA is kind of an 80 in a 50 frame. Has a bigger drag (19kg). For a NZ trailer boat fisho I think you would struggle to use the 50 to its potential, especially SI based. Personally I'd get the 30.
I've boated a bunch of game fish up to Blue Marlin (not the real big fellas mind you) on 15kg.
Give the reels a good once over. Try the drag. If the line comes of smooth with a bit of drag on it should be GTG. Lumpy, jerky drags are even worse with big fish.
Good buying I would have thought. I bought a tld 25 with shimano 10-15 kg rod for $180. Abs so think it's a bargain

yer na you need a shimano tiagra 80 wa reel is what is needed for those big bluefin in saying that you will still catch a good sized fish on that or it would make a good deep water reel as you should be able to get a good amount of braid on it :wtfsmilie:
Advice on the drag . What should I set my strike setting To ? . 80lb braid . And What leader should I use 80 ? or do I go 100 ?
What are you fishing for? I've always set at 1/3 breaking strain so 5kg for 15kg. 1/3 of 80# is probably going to max to thing out and have no more left at "sunset".Quote:

The third rule is a good one for fighting fish as you lose line your drag increases quite a bit as the spool diameter gets smaller.
So if you have most of your line out for grouper your drag will be substansially greater than set with a full spool which is not a bad thing but something to be aware of.

Drag for braid? I set mine as hard as I can but so the reel still free spools :O_O:
I want to have as much chance of stopping a big kingy as I can. If I go a third on my jigging set i'll be there for hours or lose the fish on the bottom!! Only jig up to about 150M deep though.
Game reels like 50s and 80s with mono 24 or 37 we use the third rule.
