southland searun

Managed to get away for a couple of hours chasing a sea run trout the other day.

after a slow paddle over to deeper water in flat calm conditions,i could see the odd splash and a few birds feeding..Soon had a hook up and nice little yellow eyed mullet was at the boat..Another few casts and a good take a fast run ,and i knew it was a better fish..After a good fight and a few trial runs itailed a nice 6.5lb trout into the canoe.

Fished my way back to the truck and hooked a flounder on route..Not a bad 3 hours fishing ,3 different species and great weather.Smoked trout for tea ..

Nice!:cool: not often you get a flounder on a hook!

Well done Noeyedeer. VC there are those in the know that catch flounder on a small hook by using a sweet corn burley and a kernel of sweet corn on the smallest of hooks. Netting and even spearing is easier though. Damn I love flounder.

Interesting:) Iv only ever caught two on a hook that I can remember,but Im usually targeting snapper;)

Was thinking of heading down there in the weekend to have a go, but never got around to it. Do you do it often??

Not as often as i would like to Josh,its a great place for a good trout and a few over 8lb been caught this season. Usually go down during the week,first thing in the morn for 4-5hrs max..

On an incoming tide?

i have had some success with a teaspoon head tied on just above a small hook with bait on it...You just drag the spoon along the bottom slowly stirring things up and the flounders love it.

I prefer to fish an outgoing tide ,till about an hour after the turn..to fish the channels .But the day i took these pics the tide was well in and still rising,and i just drifted and fish my way in with it....The fish are always there, just more water.
