Thursday 23 of January

Thursday the 23 of January will be a massive tide in Nelson a monumental high of 4.6 meters a massive low of 0.5 meters this will create a chance for very short people to take the deep end of the drag!

It will see massive stingrays hunt deeper water , it will expose cockle beds never seen by hungry clam hunters for the last 5 years …ladies , gentlemen, pick your spot, one evening …one chance ..

I will be selecting a team of only the loudest , hungryist, ratbaggist , knife wielding fishermen.

The selection will be tough….fitting into a wetsuit, abilities like

clearing a ray out of the net are certainly going to get you on the team,
being able to clear a net
survive knee deep mud
talk absolute bollocks
gut fish
Identify takers from chuckers
Not cut holes in the drag
Not let legal size fish go
Not fall in
Not yell at the dogs (to much)

Turn up on time …( blaming traffic is not acceptable).

If you think your strong enough , cunning enough, tall enough ( yes we are bringing a tape measure) and absolutely full of yarns and bullshit or have built a trolley to cart all the bloody gear!

So we are looking at dead low at 430pm /1630, I know it going to be a hard for some hence the early heads up…@shearer bed at our place if you would like to overnight and yarn!

It’s a secret spot …so only fishermen will turn up on the 23 rod …they know how to read the Joe Txt ..

MASSIVE LOW TIDE 23rd Jan …come drag a net ..bring a chilly bin and ice…there is a slight possibility that we may net a flounder ..only NICE PEOPLE ..

@Joe Schmo , taking the top spinning lures out there in the fall March / April …there is nothing I’d like to do more than catch a flounder on a lure …( shut up @Shearer)

Will add prawns to the mix …I’m sure this will bring on a bite …it’s a neat spot …will save you a spot in the 2024 flounder hunt

I have to go back to work on the 23rd of January and I can assure you it is a Monday...Not sure of the reception I would get if I turn up on Thursday but I suspect it would not be great....

Remember my young, handsome and brave trout guide…sometimes my work requires me to net 1000kg of fish 5 times a day:)
That’s cheating anyway. I’m pretty stoked about this whole 23 Jan thing coming up!!!

Um.......23rd Jan is a Monday?? If so Im busy and in Lyttleton for work early tuesday morning however if Thursday 26th (which is not 23rd) then I may pop down to give moral support.

Sorry to say @mikee the best tide is Monday the 23rd so I’m heading out after work to hunt the flat fish!

Tomorrow is all on, no rush the tide is later than forecast so a gathering at 430 at mine or at the mud 5 pm onwards..huge tides so should be a chance to dig a few spots at our leisure.

Bring a chilly bin and ice to get the fish cooled quickly as they can spoil quickly in this kind of heat, the more hands the better so everyone welcome.

17. Somehow it seemed to become a catch phrase for this evening. Unsure if was in reference to fish in the net, total fish caught, number of digs made at our fisher mates.
But what a night in the water.
Stingray had roped in a few ringers to make up numbers for the evening. A mob of good lads from his work. They were a raucous and rowdy bunch. Good lads that mucked in well, when they weren't hurling mud and insults at each other. LOL
We all met up onsite and found there was still a good volume of water pumping out of the estuary so we settled in for a while and waited for the water to drop, a few yarns later saw us walking nets and chilly bins full of ice down through the mud to the waters edge. Still too much water, Stingray was hesitant to get in the water, claiming it was too deep and swift still, A likely excuse for another yarn and a cold drink while we waited.
It took a while but eventually the water dropped and the channel appeared. Net in the water, Stingray on the deep end and off we went.
Each drag of the net saw a few more fish on the sand. after an hour or so we ventured further up the channel and swapped nets for one last heave.
The boys helped harvested a number of good sized cockles while others were keeping the net wet.
The last net saw a stingray surface with a couple of flatties and two mullet as net mates. Nets tidied, fish gutted and on ice we mooched off the sand back to cars and towels and dry clothes.
Two worn out dogs, several worn out people and a couple of fantastic fat flatties to fill some frypans. Always a good place for an outing. Cheers Stingray for the good company.

Anyone keen for a revisit ..Monday 5 pm at the flats …lesser tides so hopefully more flood , yes the rays are in the gutters ..but a few extra hands and yarns will make it another beauty of a evening out…I’ll bring the ice ..come have a go ..
