Thread: Tides and other such information

This website is freakin cool even if its just to learn about tides and shit. Its pretty well laid out too and I have been using it as a rough guide to when one may expect to see more action in the water.

The old boys I used to fish with when I lived up there reckoned any wind with easterlies in it was no good. I dunno if they were right or not as I didn't go out in an east wind. Take from it what you will I guess.

Easterly's here turn the fish off too but I recall Scribe saying it was the best in the firth of thames.....

Yep seen that site Gibo....I look at it and others searching for water temps.
As for predicted fish activity I have not found any fishing prediction to be very accurate at all,some of my best fishing days ever have been on the worst predicted days on the Moari calendar,fishing website bite times not much better.
To be fair to the linked site tho I have not looked at its fishing prediction to compare with actual results with this one.

My gut feeling is that I like to eat regularly each day and figure other creatures are likely the same.

Yeah man with you there on the fishing prediction part. In saying that Thursday morning is when I thought it would be good this week looking at tides and stuff and then found this and they say one of the best days of the year we'll see aye

Here I like the big tides for snapper as start of current tends to alighn with first/last light.....that said our big flat featureless bay can produce strong currents on small tides too but they are unpredictable (to me) in timing and direction........perhaps I should pay more attention to that site and see if I can find some correlations.

Yeah might be wirth a crack aye. Even pair it up with a diary of sorts and see if theres anything that stands out

The easiest way i got shown to estimate current / tide movement etc is the 'rule of 12ths'.

It can be applied to small or large tides doesn't matter. The way it works is the total amount of water to move on a tide is divided into 12 equal parts(represented by the solid dots in my sketch)

So 1 12th moves in the 1st hr, 2 12ths in the 2nd hr, 3 12ths in the 3 & 4th hrs. Then 2 12ths in the 5th hr and back to 1 12th in the last hr.

Google probably explains it better than me !

However i have found it useful especially when trying to explain tidal movement to others. Can just get 12 stones and draw some lines in the sand

Fantastic advice ...giving me something to watch ..but I'm more of a big tide person ...small tide 3.2 to 3.6 average as fishing , 4.0 to 4.2 good fishing ...huge tides you cannot get a line to the bottom...that and top and end of the tide the shit fish find your baits ...but then I've pulled hook lines set at the top / bottom of the tide and you would think the shit fish / snails would have cleaned up your baits only to have very fresh/ green fish on the line!.

Then you have the last time VC and I went fishing the bite went from dead to hot as to dead in 2 hours , the weekend after I was hunting cod they were mad as on the bite then mid tide heaps of current ...dead as ...and never got going again. This weekend VC had a slow start start then into them then dead again...he's fishing the magic hour of change of light etc etc but then again people are catching blue cod out in the mud!

Then there is Kaikoura we're there tide is only 1.2 -2m, and they are more effected by the weather pushing currents. Or the top of Stephens / Cooks strait were the tide rips and it can go from zero to 100 in a very short time and with the wind with the tide it can go from 100 to madness , then with the wind against the tide it can go from beauty to ugly in a heartbeat!

All of these currents effect our Tasman bay golden bay hell the whole of NZ ...guess this is why I love fishing everyday is epic! Not sure what I'm saying to a point. But this is fishing ..no rules never the same!

Yea logically that is how it should work but in practice out in the bay and up in the estuary, I find generally the big tides push hard from about an hour either side of high or low but the small tides can push from the start or sometimes you can wait 3 or 4 hours with little current then boom its off pushing hard or the other way around.....you can see it when you sit and watch your net in the estuary some times the water just sort of gets higher without really rushing in for a couple of hours and the next day it will rush in from the start.
