Trip up the coast surf casting

Sea had flattened off so headed up the coast to Whiritoa for a fish.Got there & set up just on dusk tonight,by time had #2 rod rigged the 1st was getting a nibble.

No worries probably a small kahawai,so got the 2nd rod out & in holder. Deal to the little Kahawai .Got that in & just put rod in stand ,2nd rod loads up real good. A good scrap followed ,once in the shore wash the bloody thing went ballistic.Felt a lot like a sting ray now & just too dark to see what it was or line angle . Head lamp 20m away & I got my hands full ,another wave & keeping the pressure on I had it on the sand.

Couple of Kahawai for the smoker to follow .Not a bad spot for night fishing & produces some very nice fish.

Well done Chris. The next time you do that can you nip over the hill and say hi to my mum in Whangamata?

Nice fish in good condition ,don't get many like this.
Just starting to come in up the coast,next time might be a few more.

Hey chris after I seen these pics i rememberd when i lived in aus I was always a soft plastic and hard boddied lure fisho,but another mate over there asked me to go surfcasting with him once on Sydney's palm beach(home and ways beach) which I had done piss all of but I went along.He new I was soft plastic mad so we used 10ft rods braided and 6 inch storm shads U heard of them?,any way we just looked for deep gutters and cast to the shoreline side of them and got hammerd buy kahawai(Salmon) and flatheads buy feeding the line out so it just slid into the gutter with the waves.We had a ball and I must try it again over here.Hve you done any of that?

Not a fan of soft plastic's ,old school bait on a hook & get that out as far as possible with a 16' rod.
Always fish with a very light drag & let the fish run if it want to.

Big schools of Kahawai around now ,couple of weeks they'll be in close.Just out a bit at the moment .

Yep I had never used soft baits for surf casting before that it was a hoot.the only time I use bait now when im fishing which saddly is once a year its livies.4600 baitrunner of the boat leave it alone and fuck around casting soft baits of the side lol. its a bit like current school!

That is mighty generous of you Chris but believe it or not the old lady doesn't eat fish. Mynold man and brother and i loved fishing but mum used to moan like hell when we brought fish into the house to fillet.

Not every one likes fish Rushy, some people like my old mum won't eat game which suits me fine.
My S/S fillet bench out side wasn't a silly idea ,keeps all the mess out the house & handy for cutting up meat too.

Yeh that the way the old man and us had it figured. Just more for us. Silly thing was she would cook the fish for us but just didn't likee the smell and certainly wouldn't eat it.
