Morning all - this weekend coming I'll be staying right beside a river that I've seen trout in before.
I'm gonna grab a day license and try my luck spinning.
Being a total novice - what do I need to know?
How fast do I retrieve - as fast as I would for Kawahai?
Standard wee spinning rod and light tackle?
Any laws I need to know?
Do they feed late at night, as I saw heaps of them over my headlamp last time I was there.
Get your self some black fury spinners.Check the conditions on your licence some rivers are fly fishing only.Trout rise just on dark.Cast upstream and retrieve down stream.Check your drag is set just enough to set the hook. Not to tight.Retrieve slower in deep pools and quicker in shallow.

find book "trout the other way" by Jameson its a bloody cracker (as its like a yellow and black spinning for dummies) written in easy to understand language with no B.S. or marketing agendas ,only a small blue paperback so doesn't take long to flick through reading it.

@Dundee - HaHa - I have never been so incredibly frustrated with a sport (except golf maybe).
Went for a wander late afternoon and into the evening - and saw quite a few fish, no huge ones but would have been fun to hook up.
I had several fish chase the lure until they got quite close and then just turned away. That was fun for the first few times and then not so much fun - seeing them there only a few feet away and not being able to get them.
I was just longing for my spear-gun to sort the situation right out. I'm not normally a quitter, but don't quite think it will be the sport for me anytime soon. I do a heap of spearfishing, so I'm used to instant gratification of dinner on the spear quite quickly after getting in the water.
Oddly enough I stood on and saw several flounder, and I would have been about 1km up from the sea.
Some days are like that.;)
The property I've moved house to is on the edge of a smallish lake.
I have been told that I don't require a license if I'm inside the property boundaries.
Would that be true?
I havnt fished it yet as I don't want to get eyeball deep in trouble, but just wondering.
Thoughts?
