Don't know what is going on here at the moment tuna wise.
We have had 2 weeks of fine weather and the sea in close is still dirty and has a roll.
Wasted a bit of fuel looking for a decent hole to do some surfcasting.
Might head to Jacksons later next week and chase a tuna and some blue nose.

albacore are often in 18deg water
Depends what kind of Tuna. Yellowfin and skippies like it warm. Albacore less so and Bluefin can handle quite cold water.
If my memory serves me the blues that hung around during Hoki spawn were in around 12-14deg.Quote:

18 degrees of out of Greymouth, in 2014 we had to troll all the way to the fingers in the Hoki trench before getting any action, 2015 we hit them straight off Greymouth as soon as the water turned blue, 2016 no trip, 2017 all I have heard was that it took 3 days for 1.5 ton on a comercial boat. Nothing in the fishing paper up here about anyone getting any here this year.

We got them on black and dark blue 6 inch rubber squid lures. Bleed them and into a ice slurry to chill them. They run very hot and spoil easily... my very limited experince / 2 cents worth.
