Thread: whats everyones favorite flies

hey team, so iv gone a got myself a fly rod. now with no idea what i should be throwing at the trout i want to be catching what would be a good fly to start with?

iv got a couple of nymph things i was told to use but they haven't been touched yet so thinking maybe i should be using something else.

Parsons Glory worked for me back in the '70's on lake Taupo around Motuoapa and Stump Bay....

Plain old blue bottle blowfly or green beetle when the season is right.

Rabbits of the red, yellow or green variety. Green orbit works well in clear water that some Rotorua lakes have.

Pretty good all rounders are #6 or #8 Hamilks killer or Mrs Simpson as they can act as nyph or inanga fished as wet flies. Much depends on the type of water youre fishing, light, depth, lake, stream, shallow, deep, time of day, wind, rain, season and other variables though and thats the intrigue of fly fishing.

Certainly not the little bastards buzzing around my bloody living room....
You can come and collect as many of these buggers you can carry...

A lightly weighted nymph will be a year round killer.
Wet steamers or smelt z patterns for river mouths
Dry flys for hotter summer days.

Lift a rock or have a look at what is buzzing around on the day and match it

Woolly Bugger

If casting is a bit new to you, try a wet Kakahi Queen & strip it back in over drop offs( Lake ) or on the swing (river). I caught my first few fish that way. Now its Pheasant Tail Nymph 90% of the time or Adams dry when its sunny. Most trout are probably caught on only 4-5 different flies. PT Nymph, Hare & Copper Nymph, blowfly dry, cicada and the old wooly bugger streamer.... most....although others will have better advice /alternatives depending on your specific water fished. Enjoy!

nymph...size 12 hare n copper....pheasant tail 12 or 14
dry...cochybondu and if those pesky flies hanging around I tie it with short squirril tail to be different... deer hair humpy good too.
wets..wee ones...all sorts loves lure ok,any of the old classics still work
lures...all the rabbits,fuzzy wuzzy, wooly buggers
depends on how you fishing...across n down=lure or wee wets
up and dead drift...dry or nymph

ok cool i love a good information overload to start the day. ill be fishing rivers like the Waitaki and the back country rivers up around Oahu, Hopkins, ahuriri and occasionally the canals. i need to do some shopping and buy one of everything mentioned and see how they all work. at the moment I haven't got any specific rig setup.....is there one i should be doing? i have just been tying a nymph thing that looks like a ball of hair the dude at the shop sold me with the rod and throwing it out into the river and floating through the holes.
