Not sure i'd secure it to my line when baited. Maybe do some recce casts first to sound out the spot.
Then take it off once sorted, $80 is a bit to leave attached to your tackle especially off rocks where the wild ones are.
Oh yeah I would never have a baited trace attached to it I have an old 12 footer that I could just chuck a shitty warehouse reel on and use that to cast out and retrieve slowly to get readings on depth and ground structures. It would be a while before I would get one as I still have a loose end to tidy up before I can go treating myself to any toys such as this. I was looking at the humminbird smartcast but for the dollars you pay when the battery in the transducer dies you have to buy a whole new transducer this one just takes a CR2025 battery in a water tight compartment so atleast you can change out batteries when they go flat.
