Abandoned mine on Crosby hut track

Went to Crosby hut with my brother. Nice tramp and nice fancy hut.

On the trip out near the road end we noticed an abandoned mine. We didn't go very far from the end. But may next time.

Does anyone know anything about it?

And does anyone know anything about the jam tins and why they're called that when I didn't see any jam around ha.

The first 2 are the mine.

The others are photos along the way

Lots of old gold mines around the area. Some are still open to visitors and filled with cave Wetas

If you go missing we will now know where you are. That old mine is collapsing.
Sideshow, Fireflite and rewa like this.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Many years ago a mate and I spent 2 days camped in one on the whangamata side sheltering from a weatherbomb that raised the creeks. The fire in the entrance kept us dry and the weta away but we never did find any gold

This one had water on the bottom so not much fun in a weather bomb.

Hahah. I'll keep that in mind.

Probably won't go exploring. Although be interesting to see if the Swede is there.

Any sign of any animals that far up the coro? Did you ever go looking for those wild sheep?

Looks like a lot of fun. There are countless old mines up in the Coromandel, no gold is why they didn't end up looking like Waihi or Golden Cross.

Yeah. A bloody big pig. Like, big. Near the crater lookout. A contractor shot 36 goats so not that many around. Saw one kid goat.

Yeah. Haven't come across any yet. Doc have done a few goat culls and the information I was going off was pretty old. 4 years or so so I reckon they got shot out.

Spent every xmas holidays up there, as a kid, explored heaps of gold mines The Old guys up there told us not to go into any mine that DIDNT have wetas.. but then again, they might've hated kids. Watch out for vertical shafts running down in the middle of the floor, nearly went fell down one of those, and they could be covered in rotten wood etc
