Was something along the lines of 6km/h on roads, 3km/h bush walking. Don't remember the contour lines bit being mentioned.Quote:

Naismith's rule is 3 mph plus 1hr for every 2000ft.
Roughly works out to 5kmh and 1hr for 600m gain. More than likely for well formed road.
Scarf's equivalence formula is better imho, as it uses normal flat pace as a starting point. So let's say someone can do 3kmh on flat track (as per MSC), and walk 5km with 500m gain it would work out to 5.0 + (0.5 x 8) = 9km (flat) : 3 hrs
