Anybody into Karting?

Just bought my first kart so pretty excited! :D

She is an Arrow AX8 with a Rotax FR125.

Now, here is the thing, I know sweet FA about karting aside from what I have read (I am one of those people that once into something I will attempt to learn everything I can about it) so I have been extensively researching.

So I was wondering, if there are any karting gurus on here, what tips and tricks are there regarding kart setup, tyre pressures, alignment setup etc that will help me. Also anything else you have learned (maybe the hard way?) that could save me some pain and money!

Otherwise just show me your Karts haha!

I'm just wondering:

1. How you're going to fit in it
2. Where in WRE you intend using it?

Haha, surprisingly I fit quite nicely! The size is deceiving, its 1.4m wide and 1.8m long!
There is an awesome club up here in Maunu, great facilities and newly extended track, club do trips all over the north island to different tracks too so will be quite cool! (Will take my rifle when heading south!) :D

Oh and it weighs 70kg and makes 32bhp! :thumbsup:

I know feck all about karting but I do know where a track is that has deer on it now and then :D

Bloke I work with is or is wanting to be nz carting champ . He say main tip to success on the track is get in front of rest of them and then stay in front . There you go tips from a pro .

End of Manoeka road by mark fagans old farm ? used to take our go kart up there on weekends to have a play when there was no racing it was powered by an old 125cc McCulloch chainsaw engine was a bloody good go kart till the old man took it off us and sold it after my older brother decided to drive it on the road one day and got caught by the old man coming from the other direction.

Enjoy it's a great sport, used to do a bit with my son about 20 yrs ago in TePuke. :thumbsup:

You probably started early like me carting firewood in from the woodshed.

Folks I knew in Albany used to do it quite competitively. I went along a couple times, after the practice lap, they would be able to work out if they needed to go up or down a tooth or two on the rear sprocket to get the cart pulling optimum for the conditions. They had a selection of sprockets. From memory, they were looking to pull 14000 rpm at peak and if he couldn't get that, he went up a tooth.

Cheersguys, yeah ishoot10s, the gearing and jetting for specific conditions on the day are key to having a competitive kart.
Apparently our track her is 11 tooth front sprocket and 82 to 86 rear depending on weight, so you basically hit the limiter just before the end of the main straight but have enough drive out of the tight corners, always a compromise with no gears!

I ran KTs for years and 250 GB.
Mates just brought rotax max setups so might get back into it

Those 250s look pretty mean, would be keen but no class up here for them, need a good open track to really enjoy them. Rotax should be good fun still!

I believe the lap record around Kyalami (has had F1 cars on it) is still held by a 250 Superkart!

Did find that Nigel Mansell still holds the all time record of 1:17, so the karts are a bit behind that but as quick as the Wesbank V8s.

My old flat mate is the sister of former OZ karting champ Matt Wall.
That family live for high octane fuel.

If you get hooked and race competively shes a bottomless pit.

A few years back I spent an afternoon in Perth Go Karting on an indoor track with Greg Murphy and Jason Bargwanna, shit they were like lightning, ended doing a few illegal tactics to slow them down.

Before I started chemo when I was first in palmy I went to the go kart track there it's pretty fun. I wouldn't mind building one.

Put this together myself a few years back. Gn 250 powered 5sp. Awesome fun on the gravel and dirt, bloody fast but oh the drifts and donuts in the paddocks were a hoot.

Hey mate
looks like a good kart there . cant go wrong with a arrow and being a ax8 isn't too old either. rotax motors can get on your nerve when your new because of the electronics and complicated motor apposed to a kt100. youll pick it up pretty easy tuning and geering. if your ever heading up through Te Aroha I race on a awesome clay track there . great atmosphere and community spirit. check it out mate coz youll soon be sick of the kartsport ruled regulations and the cost of keeping up. cheers

Spud you have opened a can of worms,1995 I raced at whangarei for a club day kt 100's omega karts I raced them for 4 years at mt wellington also Auckland and once or twice at Hamilton one weeknd street racing Tauranga loved the shit out of it but joined the Army and left it all behind.its expensive and expect to be put of the track a few times early on;) and yep lots of rules and protests but once you get into the swing you will work round them aswell.Tip!!! hold of on the first corner stay wide and wait for the pile up then scoot around and play catch up,tip 2 follow the guy in fronts lines and just wait!!......an inch from his bumper then nudge him of the turns until he gets the shits and lets you go by......tip 3 don't let him catch you once you have done that:D.Don't be afraid to ask all the racers at your track tones of questions..........................go and race at Auckland Kart track just north of Te atatu do you know were it is? it use to be called Avondale raceway.Good luck mate enjoy it you really will.

Cheers guys, good advice, had first club day on sunday, had quite a few set up issues and a shit battery which ended in 2 dnfs so big learning curve!

Have spent the last 2 evenings tuning the setup and moving the seat, shifting the weight to the rear to tame the massive oversteer it had and lowering the gearing as i was getting killed out of the tight stuff!

Still heaps to tweak that i haven't even started to understand yet!

The club does a lot of trips around the country so sure i will get down there in the near future.

But...you gotta love that rotax powerband! Not even 450 mx bikes pull like that!
Heaps of fun but a lot of learning to take in!

Haha neckshot, speaking of your first tip, the last race of the day was an "all in" so rotax, clubsport and its all together, I was mid pack for the start and got onto it a bit early in the first corner and caused the first pile up when my nosecone got taken off by a kart coming on my inside, watched the rest of the race from a flag point :(

Lol yep.also don't forget your rear wheels are wider than the front ;) its a expensive process getting another rear Axle if you cant straighten the bent one :D done it clipping a another Kart going around a pile up.....ruins the weekend.
