Got word today that DOC flew in on Monday and won't be replacing it.

Bugga! Was the first hut I hut I went to when I was with Forest Service in 74. Sad to see its now gone.
Lets face it there is no incentive for doc to replace/maintain/upgrade hunters huts.
Generally kiwi hunters dont sign hut books or pay hut fees but will actually get some wood for the hut, clear the gutters, fix the steps/chimny etc but its all stuff doc dont see so they would rather remove all those low volume huts we love so much and spend the money on great walk huts etc where the tourists dollar is.
Sad facts but we can change it by signing hut books etc and being vocal about removal of huts.
I fill in the visitor book when I hunt nearby thinking that if Search and Rescue get called out it's a good clue to whereabouts and intentions
I don't stay in huts - nice beds but the mice keep me up at night and there are too many trampers
