The Gentle Annie in 1958 as a boy, in a 1949 Desoto was an awesome trip, I can still remember the dust and the long way down if you went over the side!

Skippers canyon up to branch's on the Shotover, Molesworth from Hanmer via lake Tennyson to the gate (locked over winter)
@ebf. I’ll get them in the post next time I’m going through town.....should be within the week
Sorry @223nut. I’ll see what else I’ve got floating around. Thought I had another couple somewhere. Library used to carry a few as well
Awesome info so far gents. Much appreciated
Bannockburn to Garston via the Nevis Valley is a good day out. Don't wait too long as it gets impassable in winter.
Ashburton lakes isn't a route, it's an in & out but there's about 80km of fun gravel if head up to Erewhon & to Heron. I do it most weekends in an Subaru Outback & good at 80-100kph. Funny seeing tourists driving at 15kph maximum heading up the the Lord of Rings site at Mt Sunday

Iron bridge in Buller threw to Denniston incline, most of the track is really good but definitely need self recovery gear just in case for the makoroa crossing, huge amount of side tracks for pilon service to explore if so inclined and then there is the "Velcro Rock" as you come out on the the platou...Unbelievably high traction surface and easy to drive yourself inside out and end up rubber side up so would recommend a group for recovery if adventuring.
Having said that if you stick to the main path really 4wd is only really needed for the makarora crossing and climbing up out of there to the platou.
