Hiya all,
I am wanting to go for a horse trek while I'm down in Christchurch at the end of next month. Does anyone have any recommendations of places? I am intermediate skill level, not interested in walking on a near-dead poor old horse soul. I am going with a friend who is also intermediate level but much taller than I...
Anyone heard of these two?

Haven't heard of those two but my daughters go here for riding lessons Horse riding holidays in New Zealand
Dougie I do not know of any trekking places but be sure to enquire as to what breed of horses they have (or more to the point ask if they use standard bred pacers). I once paid good money in Glenorchie to ride a bloody horse that had no idea how to trot, canter or gallop. It was like riding a ball busting plank (it was quick though).

I can't help with down south, but if you are ever in my neck of the woods I can take you on a trek over the Kaimai's via Thompsons Track...great fun in the winter with shit loads of mud.
The suspension was fucked on the two i rode, made bumps where there were none and the throttle kept sticking.

OK so putting it in motor bike terms, you can canter just like standing on the pegs on a trail bike. The stirrups are the pegs, your legs applying pressure are the accelerator and the reins are the handle bars. The only trick is to apply the brakes you need to sit down deep, push down on the stirrups and pull back on the reins. Oh and this is all really a bluff because the horse thinks you are stronger than it is. But you aren't as it is six hundred kilos and you are not so if it takes it into its mind to not do as you ask then you are pretty much stuffed.Quote:

Spos it would be fun to hire one but the owners would probably get shitty if you were flat out for a couple of hours and it died .
And they still make bumps where there are none !

Tussock that should have been the add description the guy selling me my last horse should have put on trade me , and not the bomb proof quiet pleasure too ride . Sent the crazy Fucken horse back too him a week later,after it flew to pieces on a steep hill . He was not happy ,mind you I wasn't either !Quote:

Horses are cool, I reckon trekking to a hunting spot, tethering them and heading off for a hunt would be really cool! We've booked our two hour ride, my mate was worried about sore nuts for anything much longer :D
Cool where are you going , I've done a couple of hunting trips on horses , it's not as easy as it sounds . You need a whole lot more time too . Is a great experience thoughQuote:

I've had first hand experience of this on my first horse ride. That is the point where you stand up and enjoy the ride, ... and ask how you make it go faster. Spent the rest of the afternoon jumping farm gates and learning how to control the horse hands free, using feet knees and body position to control go, whoa, direction, ...
