Great fun place, need good tires, less than 33's and you will go nowhere and take lot of sand fly repellent. Going next month so leave some mud for us.

We go in to the northern end quite regularly but only camping and fishing. I have never hunted up there.
Apparently there are deer to be found to the east of the lake.
We see a lot of pig sign in Station creek as we drive in.

We went in last month, Thompsons flat was already pretty dry compared to six weeks prior.

I thought Thompsons flat was owned by a 4WD club? Can you drive in there without club access?

Yes Thompsons Flat is owned and no you cannot access the flat without permission and paying for access, there is a booking system. As a shareholder there is a fee for us to use the property and the hut there. There is also an old un-maintained Forestry hut at the Southern end of the flat that is available for shelter for anyone.
You can drive up the river to the locked gate and then walk over the flat to access Lake Daniel. The river bad can change dramatically after heavy rain so caution is needed.

Thanks for the clarification. I have been in there many times during the late 80’s and 90’s. Would like to go in again sometime!

I'd avoid the area like the plague
Its been well dumped by 1080 this year (most of those rats washing up on the beach came from the Maruia area).
And DOC has just spent a fortune updating the hut to a new 40 bunk one for the Te Aroha walkers and usual ChCh weekend families.

Its way too busy with people now.

I'm sure that the Te Araroa Trail doesn't go past lake Daniels

The Te Araroa trail heads down the Waiau river, then past Boyle river ... a fair distance from Lake Daniels, in fact the other side of the Main divide. It's one I'd like to do ( South Island anyway )!
