    Arrow Mainland Westcoast NZFS Huts

Stumbled on this whilst trawling the web for totally unrelated information.

www.remotehuts.co.nz lists, 77 ex New Zealand Forest Service Huts that have been pulled back from collapse by the Permolat Trust, website has all the deets including route access and detailed hut....well, details! Some of these huts are now managed by DOC, anyway, thought a good resource for anyone looking for westcoast adventures.

It includes huts now gone. Seen an old venison recovery foto of a 300 beside the Junction Hut.

Permolat have been working on these huts for some years now, they need as many volunteers as possible and the more resources they get the better, Andrew Buglass has done a fantastic job with the rest of his team. I hope that more North island huts can get saved, it was criminal what happened to the Urewera huts.

more especially when DOC knew about it and did diddly squat- someone from DOC should have lost job really

It's a great resource, I've now visited a half dozen of them on various trips, I'd rate most of them in better knick than some of the DOC huts over there

I think DOC just quietly ignored what was happening, with Te Urewera reverting to Tuhoe control I wonder if it was "convenient" to let the huts be destroyed so that DOC didn't have to maintain them and also as a way to discourage outsiders from using the area?

Not really even DOC that was directly responsible, these orders came right up from the top, DOC were ordered to essentially turn a blind eye to it all.
Not only was there no community consultation as legally required under the cogovernance model, but the demolition of the huts had actually already began before the public were informed.
It was a blatant attempt to decolonize the place, and they were not even afraid to say so.

Yet DOC still give Tuhoe $3 million per year for Hut maintenance. 3 guesses where that goes. Likewise the Pest Control monies.
