Ok, I think we have the helibiking sorted for my young nephew at xmas, so now looking for recommendations for a memorable skydive experience on the mainland.
He has not done any skydiving before so will need to be a tandem I guess

Pity Penguins can fly! What a cock up designing a bird that walks, must had been an off day?:)
My daughter is currently doing her big OE, about four days ago we got the clip of her jumping over the Swiss Alps from a kerosene taxi, never seen her scream before, seriously funny, said bad words she tells her dad off for using!
I did to skydives during the 90's ...
First one was a tandem at "Pudding Hill" and the second at "Wigram Airfield" was a solo jump at 3500Ft and the parachute deploying on a static line ... was EXTREMELY FUN .. got about 10secs of freefall with the solo .... must admit felt like 10hours :)
Motueka may be worth a call.
My advice is stump up for the training (I think it is a day in class and on the ground or used to be?) to jump out solo and be in charge of your own destiny.
20 odd years ago I did a Tandam as a gift, girlfriend bought it for my birthday, I rang to see how much to upgrade to a solo jump but the company only did tandems.
So I did the Tandam... did one forward roll out of the plane, then with a drogue shute out to stop you plummeting to earth as you are strapped together you basically cannot do anything but fall slowly face down with some dude strapped to your arse.
If you haven't got the gist yet I was extremely underwhelmed with the whole experience and have had more exciting taxi rides.
my brother used to fly "meatpacks" as he called them when he was a "new" commercial pilot getting hi hours up reckoned they were bonkers :D
I tandem skydived from 10000 feet it was a real good buzz
I did a tandem as it was bought for me as a gift. Jumped over Whitianga, no drogue. Loved every second. @Shearer. Did you jump or were you always the driver?

One of our kids recently did a tandem jump with the guys based at the Mot. Aerodrome. She loved it. Good instructors. She wasn't 100 percent certain before hand, but after the video and quick lessons she was as keen as mustard. Wants to go again. Buzzed for days
Ok, if it is going to be a Tandem, chose a nice clear day if possible, and do it over Queenstown in South Island or Taupo on the north island. The jump will more likely be recorded on video and the surrounding is really awesome. Also the bigger drop zone tend to have bigger plane that can drop you from a higher altitude (13000 ft instead of 10000) and more free fall time for your money.
I have jumped in a few places over the world( UK ,France, Florida, South Dakota, NZ) and nice surrounding is definitely adding to the whole experience .
Mate did one out of Queenstown for his stag do and had a good buzz, tandem guide let him steer for a bit and bent a few rules. Was awesome watching the experience guys coming in to land pretty bloody fast. Bit of excitement when one punter fainted and the guide had to be real careful on landing, she came round once Terra firma was reached
Looks like Mot (Tasman) do 16000 ft, so that has got my interest at the moment

I work as tandem instructor at Skydive Paradise in Glenorchy(40 minutes out of Queenstown) I have skydive over NZ from Kerikeri to TeAnau( haven't skydive the west coast yet), been doing it over 11 years and wherever you jump it will be amazing. Glenorchy is a very special place to me and however I am suspect in say it it is better than queenstown.
Call in for a chat, a coffe and a skydive if you wish.
Good luck!
Mac
The "drogue" has a reason and that reduce the velocity to a suitable one and then save your life during the opening, yes you are restricted to "fewer" movements but it is 100% more than your "static line" or first AFF(accelerated free fall), static line you have no more than 5 seconds till your parachute fully open and in the AFF case however you have the 30 seconds Freefall you will be full time supervised by two instructors.
We supply on board oxygen till jump time, at this hight you don't need oxygen during the jump…
Bellow some photos of my "neck of woods", hope you all enjoy it!

What a job Mac!!!
I've done the tandem jump over Motueka and it was awesome!! Would do it again in a heartbeat!! :)
@Pengy I have been writing about a lot things related to skydiving and "preaching" about my place of work but not me or anyone have asked you what/where is your actuall destination?
Places to skydive that I recommend "after mine":
North of SI, Skydive Abel Tasman - Motueka
West Coast, Skydive Fox Glacier - Fox Glacier
East Coast, Skydive Kiwis - Ashburton
Southern Lakes(queenstown and Wanaka) my first pick my drop zone, Skydive Paradise in Glenorchy, 40 min out of Queenstown, second NZONE skydive in Queenstown then Skydive Wanaka.
So, these are my "professional" personal indication. I hope I am/was of some help.
Cheers
Mac
Excellent stuff, thanks Mac.
I am based in Nelson, so the Motueka jump is the handiest. Having said that, as it is to be part of my nephews big adventure, I am not restricting plans to my local area. I think he is already booked on a helibiking trip out of Wanaka.
A chap I went to school with is flying the taxi for the Skydiving Kiwis outfit in Ashburton. They seem a pretty solid crew, although it's probably not the most scenic place for a jump.
A local boy came to play yesterday, great fun!

Just added that to my bucket list.
You won't regret it shootm.
Yep in the 90's I did my first static line Jump from 3000 out of a modified Cessna at Violet town, Victoria. George Creasy was my jump Instructor. Then with 3 more that day to make sure I could pull the rip cord (DRP), I was hooked.
I Completed 23 jumps in all on my way to getting my License, with only 1 minor hickup. At jump 19, I jumped a New rig (Jump Schools) and lost the right toggle (Steering) line.
I was at 3500 with a 10k cross wind. So I cut away thinking my reserve was going to a Ram chute, but to my dismay it was a roundy. I hung off the risers real hard to try and steer the bitch, but to no avail, I went over the DZ, over the road and into the neighbours farm just before his bush full of gum trees. I'd prepared to hit the ground and roll but, a wind gust got me, slammed me into the ground. Knocked the wind right out of me. I took a minute or 2 to get my breath back, only to look up and see George smiling with his hand out. "Well that wasn't expected now was it" he said. I continued my course and enjoyed an unrecorded fun jump @ 15000 from a twin engined Beach craft which had come in for our 1st birthday "Flyin". I went out in a swan dive from the side door, was the fucking most awesome free fall I'd ever had, completed a perfect backflip then went into a negative arch, scary when you do it on purpose, then flipped back over to face mother earth, tracked out to the right with my head down to see the DZ pass under me, alty check and was still at 4500 went out from the DZ until 3000 and popped. Had some fun under canopy with some flat spins and to completed a soft landing with an almost text book flair, just 2 feet from the centre mark.
I then met a lady and stopped one sort of jumping for another sort, and the rest is boring history, I should have stayed single but that's another story.
