Waikaia Two Day Adventure Trail Ride

Thought some of you may be interested in this ride we did last week. It was organised by a good friend of mine as a fundraiser for the Waikaia Prmary School.

Some mates and I led the ride over two days and 250 odd kms, over several large stations and into some awesome country. We covered Gem Lake, Hukarere, Argyle, Glenary, Glencairn stations, plus some smaller places, and a bit of Doc country as well.

About 70 riders took part, most of them would have been 35+ years old, we were the youngest by 10 years plus we reckoned. Some of those old boys can ride too :o

It was a two day event, leaving Moa Flat (Ettrick) Saturday am and heading over to Waikaia township vis Piano flat and the Whitecombe. We arrived late afternoon after several hours on the bikes.

The school put on all food including a awesome dinner on Saturday night, then a few adventurous ones headed down to the pub to have a few "quiets".

Sunday morning after another awesome brekky cooked up by a few of the local ladies we headed back to Moa Flat a different way to the day before.

Over all it was very successful, I think the guys paying got value for money and best of all we got to ride in some places where it would never be an option otherwise. So thanks to the local station owners/managers.

A few guys didnt make it, injuries, broken bikes, etc but thats all part of it. If you're keen on this sort of thing its a bloody good weekend away and well worth it. Next February it'll be run again.

I got mildly excited for a moment there when I thought your post was going to be about horse riding (man that would be a hoot over that sort of country). Still a fun thing to do (even on those new fangeled motorbike things). He he he

Looks like an awesome weekend JoshC! I used to do a few local trail rides up here in the Waikato when I was younger and loved them. Thanks for sharing.

Hehe, I know what your saying Rushy. Come from a family of horse nuts. Plenty of horse riding country up there still and most of the stations there all still use horses for a bit of mustering, which is cool.

Hard to beat the rush of booting it through that tussock at up to 80km/h on the 450 hoping like hell a rock or hole doesn't jump up to meet you! Haha. There were some epic crashes!

My Great Great Grandfather, with the help of other miners, carried his brothers body 18 miles from Whitecombe to Roxburgh in the 1870's. There was no mention of horses (or bikes) but am sure there would have been one. Like to think my brother would do that for me :ORLY: (he will be reading this soon)

Josh - have you spent much time up there?

Damn that makes me jealous, never been over there before but have done Nokomai and Eyre creek a few times. Also Glenquioch once.

I supposed to be tagging onto a ride on Tuesday through our place and several neighbours but was just too busy. Its a shame to have a bike sitting in the shed that never gets used

Those buggers were tough eh. Yeah mate, I lived at Waikaia for a while and have spent a bit of time hunting around the general area. Know (or know of) most of the runholders so have been on or around most of those places before either hunting, working, 4wd trips, flying etc.

Providing there are the numbers. It's hard organising a ride like this without fairly definitive numbers well in advance of the trip. The pin was nearly pulled this year but a handful of late entries made it worthwhile. I hope it keeps going.
